To help bring Google TV to life, Logitech will offer the first retail companion box to work with the platform, which will deliver Google TV to the 60 million HDTVs already in U.S. living rooms today. The Logitech companion box will leverage our Harmony remote technology to give you seamless control over how you interact with your content. In addition, the Logitech companion box will include a controller that’s specifically designed to optimize the Google TV experience – combining a compact keyboard, remote control and touchpad.

We will also offer a collection of additional products for Google TV, including an HDTV camera and video calling software so you can talk with friends and family from the comfort of your couch, as well as apps to turn your smart phone into a Google TV controller.

Way too expensive as a standalone.... for $300 you can get a 360 or ps3 which can do most of what googletv can (and the whole gaming part). Don't see anybody outside the google fanboys/tech crowd dropping the 300 bones. The dish device will do better but that market is limited to ~15 million people.

Sadly appletv will probably sell far better than this will.... that $99 price is the only reason why.

Yeah, 300 is priced a little high. I think $200 would be much better.

The price will drop once Logitech gets some competition. And PS3 and xbox don't handle web video or flash anywhere near as well as Google TV most likely will.

And you can't browse the web on your Xbox360!

But yes, $300 is $100-150 too expensive!

You can through media center but its about as useful as it is on the ps3 (IE not at all).

I'll take an app designed with the tv interface in mind any day (not to mention superior video quality because its for the tv and not a computer screen)..... same goes for google tv.

Until we see some real world testing you are hoping for quite a bit.... I know you have mentioned espn3 as something you are assuming will work when I have yet to see anybody actually try (and who knows they might even block the googletv from accessing the site like hulu does for devices connected to the tv that don't have a deal with them). I really do hope it works with everything but its speculation until people do hands on with the device. Also a note espn3 on the browser is pretty bad quality and ui wise on the pc which is what gtv would access.... the xbox360 version is substantially better in both video quality and ui.

Honestly, I don't have any desire to have the internet as a part of my tv. If I'm going to use the internet while watching the tv, I'll have my laptop out. That way I can have a full screen of tv and a full screen of computer. I feel like GoogleTV is trying to do too much right out of the box. But, it might just be what logitech has done with the platform.

I do like the idea of the aggregate searching capabilities in order to tie everything together, but I'm just not sold. I essentially see what logitech presented as an Android phone with a crap tone of preloaded bloatware. I'd be interested in something that felt more pure.

For now, I think the wife and I will stick with our intentions to get an AppleTV. Like many others, I am looking for a way out of my traditional cable contracts, but the networks don't seem so intent on giving up their control. I don't blame them either, the current model makes them money.

Anyway, like the AppleTV, I think GoogleTV is a great start towards the internet being our primary source of consumption/entertainment. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

netflix and pandora are bloatware?

I really don't get the 'bloatware' argument, to be honest. Yes, Sprint phones get pre-loaded with sprint TV and sprint Nascar but all that means is that they...are just there. If you dont use them, they do not detract from anything as far as how the phone runs, period. The only conceivable objection is that they take up space on internal memory and limit how many apps might be installed on the phone, but that rationale fails with the ability to apps2sd and anyone who is really filling their phone with enough apps to make that an issue is a power-user and therefore is likely rooted and can remove the pre-installed apps. Quit taking MJ Siegler seriously.

The logitech set-top box is only one of the ways google TV is going to come out. Sony is coming out with HDTVs that have it built into the TV, so no need for a separate box. The poster who said the price will come down with more competition is correct, expect googleTV to proliferate in much the same manner as android has on phones since its a free, open-source product for any manufacturer to use. Twelve, count it, twelve android phones were announced in the past 24 hours over the course of CTIA. No surprise that android is the only platform posting gains in both purchases in phones and also web use over the past 6 months, eating away at WinMo, Palm, RIM and even vaunted Apple.

Take what I say with a grain of salt because I am a google fanboy, but really the product is killer and has loads of content that AppleTV lacks.

Somewhat related, here's an article about the partnerships that Sprint has made for its android phones. I didn't really believe it till I read the full article, but a quick list of participants in the new 'Sprint ID' concept includes:
*Oprah Winfrey
*ESPN
*E! Entertainment
*MTV
*eBay
*EA
*BlackBoard (formerly WebCT)
*HSN

That slices across pretty much every demographic available. Though its a Sprint deal on this, you can pretty much bet that those will get integrated into GoogleTV in the end. That Google got Turner broadcasting, HBO and even the friggin NBA to ink deals puts the writing on the wall for this being a home run if it falls into place like android phones have, assuming the universe doesnt divide by zero and Oracle doesnt eff things up in court.

Smartphones are gaining such momentum that theres talk of drastically reducing feature phones across the board, the consumer market is on board and ready for this. Hell, throw in the upcoming Google Music service and...well...you figure it out.

Wow, it can do some of the same things as my $400 HTPC, and less!

I didn't mean bloatware, exactly.

I think I was expecting yesterday's announcement to be along the lines of a "Google/HTC Nexus One" solution for the television; it felt more like a Samsung Fascinate being announced. The Fascinate is still a powerful and capable phone, but it has a large smathering of Samsung on top of Android.

I was truly interested in seeing what this was going to be, but in the end I'm not interested in buying. A lot of that is because of the price point and because I'm not sold on browsing the internet from my tv, when I can do it so much better from my laptop.

It will be interesting to see where this market goes.
