What is this? It was mentioned to my dad from the people at best buy so that he could do away with his home DSL line and provide him with WiFi.

It goes into presumably a laptop and picks up a 3G signal if available for internet. It can also use the Edge network if 3G isn't available, but this can be quite slow.
This will probably be slower than his current DSL, but it will have much more portability.
