I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but why couldn't these two stadiums keep the grass for the NFL season? It looks great in both stadiums.

I know they tried it with the pallets in Houston for a number of years and that was a disaster. Looks much better now, though.

Has this been discussed by the Texans and Cowboys?

Money. With all of the other events during a season that tear up the grass it costs too much to keep replacing it.

It is wild to me that the savings by not having real grass outweigh the potential of a CeeDee Lamb or Nico Collins tearing their ACL on turf and the potential losses a team could see from that in ticket sales, playoff runs, etc.

Unfortunately neither of these stadiums was built including the equipment to roll the field outside. The only teams that have stadiums with that technology are Arizona and Las Vegas. Houston's stadium is older so that makes sense, but when the stadium in Dallas was built it absolutely could have been included.

Seven teams from the NFL who normally play on turf had to have grass installed to host World Cup games. In addition to Dallas and Houston there was also Atlanta, New England, Kansas City, Los Angeles, and NY/NJ.

The NFL should mandate grass.

The field elevation at Cowboys stadium is 4' higher than usual because of the dirt, sand, drainage and sprinkler systems installed. They obviously also had to close the field-level suites to do this.

There's no way they're keeping the grass.

Owners already claim there is no statistical data to prove regular grass is better than turf.

Idgaf what it takes to make it happen, nor am I predicting what they will do. Simply sharing what they should so. Corrupt ass FIFA protects its players with grass fields. Untwist your panties about the idea that the NFL should do the same.

Yall realize that the grass in Arlington and Houston was produced in Utah and shipped here for installation in both stadiums? Was our Ag group asked about this?

Not when I was growing up in Connecticut (which is a New England state). That said, I am a proponent of natural grass for the NFL.

None. Though to be fair, it would be a much larger expense than just ripping out the old turf, installing some irrigation, dirt and grass. The technology exists. Look at what Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid did: redid their old stadium and the grass breaks down into large "pallets, with a hydronic system that lowers it so it sits under the stadium with UV lighting and irrigation, so they could still have a "multi-use" stadium for the other events. It's possible. It would certainly be an expense, but the technology makes it feasible to do without having to build a new stadium though I'm sure owners would claim they have to.

Almost all the criticisms about natural turf have solutions. Even the criticism about the weather and "wear and tear" during the games are mitigated with the types of turf they use overseas on the soccer pitches (having natural grass that has synthetic fibers woven with it so it's more durable)

The world cup just basically proved it could be done. The grass the WC used comes from a farm in North Carolina. It was trucked in from there. Could easily be localized and done 8-10 times a year for a NFL team.

One thing I heard on some sports radio show was that the owners have almost certainly noted it as a potential bargaining chip when the collective bargaining agreement comes up for renegotiation.

If the players want all the fields to be grass, what are they willing to give the owners in return?

As long as JJ owns the Cowboys, they'll never play on natural turf at Jerry World.

It will always be artificial turf and no curtains until the day he dies.

Either Reliant or Cowboys COULD have included it (Phoenix's stadium was built 3 years before Cowboys and there were at least 2 European stadiums with rolled in tray grass before or about the same time as Reliant), but it wasn't practical in either, especially Dallas. Phoenix has something like 3500+ hours of sun per year and the low temps rarely get into the 20s, and not many days in the 30s. DFW, on the other hand, is higher than average but is still quite a bit lower than Phoenix in terms of sun and winter lows get down, and stay down, far more here. Growing the field outside just isn't practical in Texas, even in Houston.

Besides, some don't like the Cardinals grass. They say it is too slick.

They used to grow the grass outside Reliant Stadium in the parking lot when they had the tray system. Everyone hated that field though.

Houston and Dallas both have a roof they could just keep open.
