What is going on with the standings at espn and nfl.com? This time of year, I'm looking for all the x's, y's and z's to make clear which teams have clinched playoff spots, division titles, etc. Both websites only show Green Bay as a playoff lock. By my calculations, Dallas and Tampa Bay will win their divisions even if they fall to 10-6. Arizona will be in the top 7 even if they fall to 10-6. Both websites employ plenty of math nerds. So why no x's and y's by those teams?

Edit: I had no idea the season was changed to 17 games this year. Delete thread. Ban user.

Through the first 14 weeks, all 208 NFL games were played as scheduled. Because of the Covid-19 outbreak, 3 games got rescheduled.

Monday
Las Vegas Raiders (7-7) 16 Cleveland Browns (7-7) 14; It was originally scheduled for this past Saturday
Minnesota Vikings (7-7) 17 vs Chicago Bears (4-10); 9 Played as scheduled,

Tuesday
Washington Football Team (6-7) vs Philadelphia Eagles (6-7) 7:00 PM eastern. It was originally scheduled for this past Sunday.
Seattle Seahawks (5-8) vs Los Angeles Rams (9-4) 7:00 PM eastern. It was originally scheduled for this past Sunday.

As a result, Week 15 games are taking across 5 days: Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. After all of the Week 15 games are completed, we will get a clearer NFL playoff picture with 3 weeks left in the regular season.

I thought I had sport knowledge. Sad face.

I object to the 17 game season. 16 was such a nice, clean, even number. Why don't we change the NBA to 83 games and MLB to 163 games? Premier League to 39 while we're at it.

If it means more money, it'll certainly happen eventually.

If the NBA were to have a proportional increase in the number of games to the NFL's 6.25% (1/16), the NBA would add 6 games for an 88-game season. Likewise, the MLB would add 10 more games for a 172-game season.

I agree that 16 was a nice and even number, and I liked the scheduling format:

  • Each team plays twice against each of the other three teams in its division: once at home, and once on the road (six games).
  • Each team plays once against each of the four teams from a predetermined division (based on a three-year rotation) within its own conference: two at home, and two on the road (four games).
  • Each team plays once against each team from the remaining two divisions within its conference that finished in a similar placement in the final divisional standings in the prior season: one at home, one on the road (two games).
  • Each team plays once against each of the four teams from a predetermined division (based on a four-year rotation) in the other conference: two at home, and two on the road (four games).

Premiere league is the only one that makes any sense in the first place. play everyone twice, one at home, one away.
