Quotes from Cortland Finnegan’s Monday evening radio appearance on Nashville’s 104.5 the Zone following his Sunday fight with Andre Johnson that got both players fined $25,000.
“I believe I toned it down completely and started playing within the rules because the NFL is changing and you’ve got to adapt to change. So I’ve done that…”
“Did I want it to escalate into that? Absolutely not. …The only thing that upsets me -- I’m not worried about getting hit, I’m hard-headed as it is -- if you reverse that and it’s me, I’m not at the radio show. I’m sulking because I got a game suspension. But you twist it and it’s because it’s me. You live and you learn. Oh, well.”
“It’s not the action that we’re after anymore, it’s the actual person. And that happens to be I’m the instigator, I’m that guy.”
“If you reversed it, by any stretch of the imagination, you get me, here, suspended…”
“This is not hockey this is the NFL. It’s crazy to me to see people condoning this like I got what I deserved. So be it…”
“I do want to apologize for the way I left… and the waving …”
“I guess he got his money’s worth.”

Playing the victim. You have been warned by NFL and fined by the NFL, of course if that was you, you would have been suspended. Stay out of trouble. He just doesn't get it, IMHO.

i don't buy that for a minute...he knows exactly what he did and he'd do it again.

the bottom line is that straight up, talent vs. talent, he's got zero chance of stopping AJ (or most of the guys he lines up against for that matter). so to level the playing field, he tries to play mind games and get in the other guy's head. if he can get them off their game, it brings them down to his level where he can have a chance to compete. sometimes he does it through trash talk, sometimes it's through constant cheap shot.

but whatever he's doing, it's working. he's one of the most hated players in the nfl and he got one of the nicest guys in the league to snap. if it takes AJ out of the game, the titans take that trade every day of the week.

Something missed by Houston fans. Finnegan is right. Defensive players are held to different standard than offensive players. If AJ jammed him initially and roles were reversed, then Finnegen is missing multiple games.

I stopped assuming that "he's a nice guy because he plays the game right" and "he's a class act" after Marvin Harrison murdered somebody.

If the shoe was on the other foot, he is righ, he would be suspended. He has created this image in the league and he has been fined and warned by the league for his actions. It's all his doing and he would need to be held accountable.

Bottom line, they were losing, he's a punk and thought what the hell. Let me see if I can get under this guys skin. He just wasn't prepared for the response he got.

Personally, I would have suspended them for the rematch because it could get worse unless the commish is at the game.

He's trying to give himself a space for the next time he does the same thing.

I almost like him just because he's the scrappy underdog... but he takes it too far with the illegal contact, you can be annoying and physical without punching someone in the throat. Also the haircut is a serious party foul.

Like it or not, your reputation precedes you. Johnson is the best receiver in the NFL, but you don't see him going around being a prima donna, getting into trouble off the field, throwing tantrums in the locker room, etc. He is known for being a humble, soft-spoken guy who is not out looking for the spotlight. Finnegan, on the other hand, is known by anyone who plays or keeps up with the NFL from commentators down to your average fan as a jackass who plays dirty.

The default mindset you're put in when evaluating this incident is that it must have been pretty bad to get AJ to snap like that. As such, Finnegan likely got everything that was coming to him.

There's a difference between being the scrappy underdog and a dirty player. Finnegan has no desire to be the scrappy underdog. He has admitted himself that he wants to be the dirtiest player in the league. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to have an ounce of sympathy for a guy who openly admits he wants to be a dirty player and then gets his ass beat.

It's a different sport, but Shane Battier is a perfect example of how you can be a complete PITA to the opposition without being a dirty player. You get in guys' heads by living in their back pocket and keeping them from doing what they want to do, all while staying within the rules of the game.

The outcome definitely would have been different if the roles were reversed, but not because there is a different standard between offensive and defensive players. It would be because there is a different standard between players with a known of history of this type of behavior (Finnegan) and players with relatively spotless records (Johnson).

If the same situation played out and it was a cornerback like Nnamdi Asomugha and a receiver like Terrell Owens or even Hines Ward or someone like that, then the outcome would have been different.

People would line up to pay $8,333 a punch for shots at that idiot's melon. So yes, he got his money's worth.
