Dan Mullen has been with Urban since 1999 through last year. He followed Urban from Notre Dame to Bowling Green to Utah to UF. Now he's at Mississippi State who just beat UF last night. In Florida.

He was the QB coach for Alex Smith and was the OC/QB coach at UF.

Was he the brain behind Urban's spread option offense Fran wanted to run so dearly and made Torbush yell out "WOW??"

Thanks dcaggie04 for bring up his name on the other thread.

I don't think he's the entire reason for their success, but obviously a big part of it. You have to remember Florida lost one of the top college QB's of all time, their stud OC, and their stud DC over the span of 2 years. Part of being a great HC is finding new assistant talents as, if you're doing it right, the current ones will eventually move on to bigger and better things. Urban is experiencing the first round of going through this, but Florida will bounce out of it.

mmm... Dan Mullen was the OC at UF...

And his recruiting class at Miss State ranked 25th. Miss State is not the easiest place to recruit.

Urban has been lucky to jump to schools that have stocked teams.

He took over Utah with a lot of talent, when he left we didn't exactly have a lot of depth. Took a year for Coach Whittingham to get us back on track.

FUCUM jumped to Florida where he already had Chris Leak running the show and Tebow in waiting.

I don't see Urban going anywhere after Florida beside to a retirement community. The guy is seriously going to die on the field if he doesn't call it a day sometime soon.

Sorry, for those of you who didn't see my initial post earlier in the week. We use an acronym for some of our former coaches. Urban is FUCUM (Former Utah Coach Urban Meyer).

Yeah, Bowling Green was just ****ing loaded with talent. What with their 2-9 record the year before he took over. His first year they were the first MAC team to beat 3 BCS teams in the same year. Look at all of those NFL guys from that roster. He really lucked out there.

Utah lost Gross the year he took over & they had 0 draft picks in 04. 5 in 05 that all came on under Meyer's staff. Yeah, your squad was just loaded back then.

He didn't have Tebow waiting for him either. He recruited him during the 05 season and Chris Leak was just amazing in college, huh?

Why would Utes be bitter about Meyer? He gave them an undefeated season with a BCS bowl win. He also put together a great staff so Wittingham could stay behind and continue that success.

What Meyer started and one of his assistants continued probably played a big part in Utah getting into the pac10.

It is not like he left you for BYU.

Dan Mullen would probably be a good fit for A&M.

Do you know who hired Dan Mullen at Mississippi State? Bill Byrne's son (who is now AD at Arizona).

don't worry. urban would only drop dead on a sideline if we had hired him a few years back

Ah. I see how the cycle works. Byrne hires McKinney's buddy Sherman and then Byrne "retires" and McKinny hires Byrne Jr. and we fire Sherman and hire Mullen.

I like it. Except for the part where we had to suffer through Sherman.

And where does Kevin Bacon fit in this?

Due to Mullen's big win against Florida last night at the Swamp he just pulled in this evening a verbal commitment from **** Nickalos Brassell, the #1 player in Mississippi. This is why you hire a coach who can prepare and motivate a team to play above their talent level.

You think he'll follow Mullen to A&M??

@Syd, The 03 and 04 Utah teams were full of Ron McBride talent. McBride was a decent coach and one hell of a recruiter but didn't no how to utilize everything he had.

Urban won with McBride's kids. We aren't bitter one bit about FUCUM leaving to Florida, Coach Whittingham has done just fine since his departure.

@Bilbo, Whittingham has been at Utah for 16 years. When FUCUM left, we lost the majority of the coaching staff. Whittingham has pretty much reloaded the staff with ex-Utah or ex-yBu staff.

There are only two coaches left from the 03/04 seasons. Coach Whittingham and Coach Jay Hill, the rest were brought in after FUCUM jumped.

Maybe Mullen is trying to get the A&M job with his maroon shirt on just like Gillispie did with his Kentucky blue tie.
