I just inherited a keeper team from an inactive owner. I've never done a keeper team. I've done plenty of regular fantasy football though.

Basically I need some input on what to do first (ex. how many to drop and how many rookies to draft). I have a ton of WRs and no RBs.

Also, I have never had defensive players before.

Here's my team
QB Phillip Rivers
QB Jake Delhomme
QB JT O'Sullivan

RB Frank Gore
RB Thomas Jones
RB Chester Taylor
RB Justin Fargas
RB Rudi Johnson
RB Deuce McAllister

WR Steve Smith
WR Randy Moss
WR Dwayne Bowe
WR Vincent Jackson
WR Kevin Curtis
WR Isaac Bruce
WR Chris Chambers
WR Antwaan Randle El
WR Brandon Stokley

TE John Carlson
TE Anthony Fasano
TE Alex Smith

K Josh Brown
K Shayne Graham

P Andy Lee

Defensive starters
DT Shaun Rogers (Cle)
DE Aaron Kampman (GB)
DE Kyle Vanden Bosch (Ten)
LB Gary Brackett (Ind)
LB Terrell Suggs (Bal)
LB Morlon Greenwood (Hou)

that's a humongous list of players. how many teams are in it? I'm assuming you can keep 25 players? do you have a sense of how many players the other teams keep?

you obviously have some good players you definitely don't want to get rid of, but there are others, where it simply depends on whether you'd be able to get better players than who you currently have.

my advice would be to go thru each of the players and figure out which guys you definitely do want to keep, definitely don't want to keep, and then figure out how many keeper spots that leaves. from there, figure out which guys have upside (who will most likely outperform what they've done up until now) and which guys are over the hill and will underperform compared to past production (Thomas Jones would be a good example of this...they may be going with the rookie Shonn Greene, as well as Leon Washington).

need to know:
1. How many you HAVE to keep
2. In keeping players, how's does that affect your draft positioning
3. Can you trade before the draft

The commish said "Picking a player off waivers will not affect your draft position, so pick up as many players as you like(don't pick up the rookies though)."

I have the 4th pick for the first round, not sure about the others yet. I'll find out tonight.

Yes I can trade before the draft. Here is a team I'm targeting:

QUARTERBACKS
Jason Campbell
David Garrard
Matt Ryan
Sage Rosenfels

RUNNING BACKS
Adrian Peterson
Steven Jackson
Clinton Portis
Fred Jackson
Tim Hightower
Felix Jones
Marshawn Lynch

RECIEVERS
Braylon Edwards
Roddy White
Greg Jennings
T.J. Houshmandzadeh
Reggie Wayne
Deion Branch

Jason Witten
Dallas Clark
Tony Scheffler

Damn, that team is good. Your team is lacking quite a bit. Quite frankly, you don't have much the other team needs, except Rivers.

BTW, I do understand someone gave you this team, so I am not ragging on you.

I would probably approach this team as a multi-year project. You've got a lot of spare parts that really aren't gonna do much for you. The only real piece you have that's valuable, as mentioned, is Rivers. I might see if you can spin him into Matt Ryan and one of his RB's. He's got plenty and would probably be willing to give up Ryan if he's getting a better QB who's only a few years older.

You might also consider trading Moss or Steve Smith for players that can help you in a year or two (i.e. trade them now, so that when your team is competitive, you'll have up and comers who are coming into their prime). By the time your team is competitive, Moss or Smith will not be as valuable to you and you won't be able to trade them for value.

I agree with the above advice, your team is at least 2-3 years away from being competitive (assuming everyone in your league is on par with the team you posted that was significantly better than yours). Two really good drafts / years of trading and you might be competitive, but this year is pretty much shot. Just think about which positions are easier to project rookies at and those are positions you can try to build through the draft (RB, TE maybe, some defensive positions). WR and QB probably need to be built through trades. I would only trade Rivers if you can get a solid young QB and an upgrade at WR in return.

Here is my quick and dirty analysis without knowing what you lose for keeping a player or what you gain by not keeping a player (QB/RB/WR only):

Definite Keepers: Gore, Bowe, Jackson,

Definite Keepers, but try to trade: Moss, Smith, Rivers

On the Fence: Fargas, Taylor, Curtis, Chambers, Randel El, Stokely, Delhomme, O'Sullivan

Definite Trade/Don't Keep: Jones, Bruce, Duece, Rudi Johnson (where is he now?)
