An important rule to remember when resigning from a position is that you never want to leave on bad terms if possible. Making a graceful departure from your employer is a smart career strategy because you never know when you might need your supervisor for a future reference. In today’s ever-changing economy, there’s also a chance you will end up working with your former co-workers or even manager at another company. The following are strategies to help you leave on the most favorable terms possible:

The standard notice has traditionally been two weeks but be aware that some companies may immediately escort you to the door. Be prepared for this scenario by clearing personal files and removing personal belongings ahead of time.

Volunteer to train or work with your replacement to effectively transition your workload.

Don't slack off during the last weeks on the job, it's important to stay an active member of the team.. Be sure to do your best to complete all open assignments and leave detailed progress reports for your supervisor and co-workers.

Before walking out the door for the last time, be sure you have contact information for key supervisors and co-workers that you want to keep as part of your network of contacts.

Unless your boss is expecting you to resign, your decision may come as a surprise. The boss may get emotional or even confrontational in which case, stick to your prepared comments.

No matter how good it makes your ego feel to have your current employer respond with a counteroffer, career experts advise against taking it. Often, employers attempt to keep good employees with a counter offer because it’s cheaper than hiring and training someone new. The issues that led you to consider another job rarely change. Whether the employer admits it or not, your dedication will be questioned, and once that happens, your time on the job is limited. Recent studies show that of those who accept counteroffers, 85 percent have left the company within 6 months, and 90 percent have left within a year. A generous estimate of the number of people who stay longer than a year is from 2 to 3 percent. Keep focused on the long term benefits you set out to attain versus the flattery of being bought by your current company in short term.

Dear (Supervisor/HR rep),
I am writing to you today to officially submit my resignation from ABC Company effective (XXX Date). After careful consideration, I have accepted another position in line with my long-term career goals.
Please be assured that I will do all I can to assist in the smooth transfer of my responsibilities before leaving. My experience at (your company) has been rewarding and productive, and I wish only the best for you and the organization.
Thanks again for having me as a part of your team.
Sincerely,

(your name)

Rudy,

You really need to get your lithium levels checked more often.

On a serious note, has anyone been in a situation where they resigned/quit and were immediately escorted to the door?

I'm sure its happened a ton.

Honestly, if I ran a business (and obviously, it wasnt that hard to train a replacement), id escort someone out immediately. Don't need any dead weight hurting morale or coming a detriment.

I took less than a minute to think and came up with 4 friends who have been escorted out upon submitting their notice.

Bosses have egos...it happens quite often.

It happens in my industry all the time. Last time I quit, I was allowed to clean out my desk and wrap a few things up. They trusted me, but didn't want me there any more.

It happens a lot in sales jobs, because they don't want you to have anytime to take your clients with you.

My company has escorted people out on a couple of occasions without letting them gather their personal stuff. It was done by the two presidents. If it happens to me, I think they had better call the police, because those guys aren't tough enough to make me leave without gathering my personal stuff. They can watch, but my stuff ,is my stuff.

Rudyjax, thanks for the sample letter at the top. A buddy of mine is giving notice tomorrow, and was wondering what to say. I sent him what you posted.

With 2 of my previous employers, I have known people who have presented very well-written resignation letters, only for the person to be escorted out the door some 30 minutes after presenting the letter of resignation. In one case, the person was given a paycheck for the remaining 2 weeks, and in the other case, the termination was effective immediately. I suggest that you are prepared for the worst...better to be prepared than unprepared.

From my experience I was allowed to serve my 2 weeks in full since I had a lot of things I had to transition over to someone else, so I tried my best to pass on as much info on those 2 weeks as possible. However, I've known of others who were walked out ASAP.

Generally you are only escorted out immediately if you leave on bad terms, deal with very sensitive information, or are going to a competitor.

I just dropped mine. I thought I would be escorted out immediately but they are letting tie up loose ends.

***Manager***,

After an appropriate period of deliberation, I have come to the decision to tender my resignation from ***EMPLOYER*** effective ***DATE***.

Please know that I still maintain a high level of respect for you as a manager and colleague, and I thank you sincerely for the support and assistance you have offered me in each of those roles. I have been proud to work for over the past six months; it has been a journey that has provided me an unparalleled foundation to move forward to new and exciting opportunities.

As such, I have decided to become a professional pirate. It has always been a dream of mine to live the life of a swashbuckling corsair, beholden to none and master of all I survey. Once my crew of unabashed rogues is assembled, we shall take to the capacious expanse of the high seas to pursue fortune, fame, and hair-raising adventure.

Our path may not be filled with the porcine comforts and technological marvels that provides, but we shall nonetheless move forward to carve a name for ourselves in the annals of bold insurgency and death-defying derring-do. Once I have a keen blade at my hip and the Jolly Roger is flapping high above me, I believe I will find my true calling.

Please note that I am currently accepting applications for First Officer, if you are at all interested in applying. I will provide a full medical and dental plan, which will offer immediate coverage of all maladies other than scurvy and the occasional bout of rickets.

Sincerely,
***YOUR NAME***

If your soon-to-be employer is cool with it, ask if you can let them know your start date until after you've given two weeks. When I got a job with Cintas the manager asked if I could start in 2 weeks. I told him that my current employer (UCS...go figure), would walk me out the day I resign.

Sure enough, that happened, and I started a Cintas a couple days later.
