Created this sock to hopefully tap into the Aggie Network's massive experience and knowledge for a little guidance professionally. I'm going through some things right now and am not really sure which way to go. Some particulars:

- class of 2005 - COSC
- MBA from TTU(I know, I know)
- worked for a couple commercial construction companies in a PM, Estimator or BD role until 2020
- started my own GC business in 2020 and have been doing that ever since with a comfortable amount of success
- currently(for the past month) do not have any ongoing projects by choice due to currently going through a divorce where I am the custodial parent of 2 kids under 10

My consideration is this. Do I weather the divorce and then go back to pursuing projects as a self employed individual? Should I put feelers out to potentially go back to working for someone else? My concern with continuing to do my own thing is that I fear my "soon to be ex" would use my current lack of income against me in court as a way to try and end up with child custody. That said, I do enjoy the freedom I have and am not too keen on going back to working for someone else.

I think if I were to try and find employment, it would be something on the owners side as an owners rep or construction management consultant and those opportunities seem fairly rare.

Anyway, just thought I'd ask and see if I could get some input or thoughts that I haven't considered as I try and weigh my options here.

TIA

I do not know anything about the legal part of your question but having 2 young kids myself the flexibility to be your own boss and set your hours would be the highest priority imo. Not asking boss or company to leave for carpool or kids events- you just can. I'm lucky that even though I'm not self employed I can be there as much as I need to for my kids and that is what keeps me where I'm at. Best of luck to you whatever you decide!

Ask your divorce lawyer. I think they take annual income into account, not what you have on the books right now. Your lawyer will know this.

It will be very difficult to go back to work for someone else after you have run your own show. Maybe after you have done it for years and years, kinda to ride off into the sunset, but you are too young for that.

If you have no income, maybe you should be asking your wife for spousal support. Or at least use it as a bargaining chip.

The circumstances and threshold to meet in TX for spousal support are damn near insurmountable.

But now you've got me curious!
