Just exploring the idea and curious what roles they may have for "our kind"

Probably lots. Are you looking to work in Austin, or in one of the regions?

I must say, I sure enjoyed my summer job as a construction inspector in Galveston (30 years ago now).

Austin to Waco. I saw the construction inspector jobs. Everything else seems to be tied to engineering so I wasn't sure if there was anything else to be looking for.

Txdot is ruled by engineers. Generally your upward mobility will be limited without an engineering degree. For example, to be the director of construction for a district you would need an engineering degree. I am not saying you can't have a great career there with cosc degree, just something to consider.

Txdot has outsources a lot of their construction management to engineering firms especially for major projects. If you drive down IH 35 look at the logos on the trucks doing construction. You will see the contractors and the inspectors. I think I saw Raba Kistner doing inspection around Salado when I drove through the other day.

One caveat, you may be able to sit for your P.E. with enough experience and there are folks at TXDOt with PEs that can sign for you and vouch for your experience.
