back when I moved in October I applied to several positions i would find on linkedin, such as "customer service representative", "special events coordinator", "social media coordinator". I was pretty desperate to find my first job after college so I went to several of these scam places to interview. They would tell you they worked with the best telecommunication companies and blah blah trying to sell you a good opportunity, how in a few months you would be in a management position, and in a year you could even start your own business. Once you ask them what they really do they basically tell you in nice words that you will be selling DirecTV at a Sam's Club (if you are lucky) or door to door sales.

I will admit I graduated with little relevant experience so I almost f-up and took one of this jobs, but before signing all the paperwork I called and said this was not my opportunity.

These companies prey on recent grads that just need a job. The starting pay is either miserable ($10 hr) or commission only. During training at the last place I went, they basically tell you to lie to the customers and start with the medium-package, that way you can sell them the $150 thing as the "cheapest" and then just go down to their needs or go up.

Anyway screw all these companies:
CMX
Vincere Associates
Franklin Endeavors
CGM
Atomic Austin
and I'm sure there are far more

Luckily life gave me a break and I started on my first job on monday and I love it so far.

I can't speak for those companies but my d2d selling experience has repeatedly opened doors for me since graduating.

I agree with your point though. A lot of those companies compensate recruiting so you end up with a lot of misleading job posts. They should be pretty easy to sniff out though

i was pretty desperate back in the day when i finished grad school. Interviewed with one of those companies and then actually went on the ride along day. They were essentially trying to get businesses to switch electric providers. 100% cold calls and dropping cards off with receptionists. They called that night and offered me the job. I told them "no" and the woman acted like I'd turned down a million dollars. "do you realize the opportunity you have with us?" I laughed, said yes, and hung up the phone.

Any "job" that says you'll be in mgmt in a couple months is a joke.

Because Austin is full of idiot hippies and new sip grads with worthless degrees in things like 14th Century Lesbian Eskimo Studies.
