So... my info is 25 years old but... pertains exactly to your situation.
While I was in school as an Engineering Major at A&M, I was able to get a summer job working for the Highway Department (now TXDOT). I spent about 4 months that summer plus overtime watching guys pour concrete between Houston and Galveston. I'm sure you can find something similar in your area. They're probably looking for current students rather than grads but... it's good work. My first concrete pour was the driveway for The Ritz Gentlemen's Club at Monroe and I-45. Gotta say, those dancers who were my age... wow. I never went in there as a customer, only saw them in street clothes.
After I graduated from A&M, I worked as a substitute teacher in Pflugerville and Round Rock. I also did this after I got back from Armor Officer Basic in 1994. But from August through October (I started at Fort Knox on Halloween 1993) of 1993, I did substitute teaching in Pflugerville and Round Rock. Sign up for as much stuff as you can and you'll get work. After I got back from AOB, they figured out that I could teach Calculus and I had work every day that I wanted it. In 1993/1994, we were talking about $50/day (looks like it's $85/day these days). For the record, in Pflugerville Junior High, they offered me the In-School-Suspension class as a full-time job before I even substituted in the class. Yeah, NO!
What area (not 10-digit grid coordinate) are you located in?
