Well...I graduated in May 2000 and could not find a job! I had a friend who taught at a high school and I went and applied. I was a biomedical sciences major and had I think two teaching classes ( they were easy electives..shh!) but I graduated and had not even considered teaching. So, they hired me and put me into their alternative certification department. I had to guarantee that I would stay 3 years or would have to pay for my certification. It really is a sweet deal. Seriously, you have a job for three years unless you mess up! Well, it is my 4th year of teaching high school Chem and coaching soccer. If I were you I would look on teh web site for the school district you want to teach in and see if they have an alternative certification program. It was awesome and MUCH cheaper than going through regional services or a university!

Be patient... the state is getting ready to pass legislation that will soon take effect that allows non-certified teachers to get on with a school district so long as they enter a teacher education program. However, data proves that non-certified teachers rarely stick with teaching beyond one year. If you are interested in a legitimate program, check into the Post Bac program at Texas A&M... Information can be found here: http://www.coe.tamu.edu/~tlacgrad/certification.html#Post-Bacc

Most alternative programs are for the HS level due to the demand for secondary teachers. For the Middle Grades and Early Childhood levels, schools will usually hire certified teachers because they tend to be in greater supply. Schedule an appointment with the advisors in 107 Harrington if you are interested in traditional certification.

Last I heard all you had to do to get certified is to pass the ExCet exam in your fields. I passed the Health exam and the Physical Education exam to be certified in Secondary Education. I quit teaching in public schools 2 years ago. They aren't run like they were when most of us went to school. Best of luck and watch your back, especially if you coach also.
