How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ok guys I have an interview on wed for MWD and I know not to over dress for it. I wore khakis, boots and a button up to my last MWD interview, so I was going to do that again. Only thing is the low is going to be 34 so should I add a sport coat to it.

Yes! Even if your over dressed it shows that you are serious about the job and you are not taking the interview lightly. I interview all day and I cant begin tell you what some people think interview clothes are!!!!

No. If you overdress for a job like this it tells the manager you don't understand what type of job you are applying for and your chances of getting hired are limited. This job is not apples to apples to 95% of the jobs out there.

I disagree. I don't see how adding a sport coat or even a conservative suit all of sudden turns the guy into some kind of nancy boy. If he has the right personality/attitude for MWD then that should be apparent no matter if he's wearing a jacket or not. Don't wear a fleece, I would think negatively of that.

Do you know who be interviewing you? Big company? Keep in mind that your potential future boss giving the interview may not be your typical good old boy. There's plenty of Europeans and other foreigners in the business who have a much different culture than we do.

That's great that you disagree. The fact is I've done hundreds of interviews for this position and we've hired one guy that wore a tie and he took a lot of grief from the managers. They wouldn't have hired him if he wouldn't have been a referral from someone they trusted. This is a multinational company with managers from all over. I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin.

So how has tie guy worked out? Did he make a good hand? If not, I guess it was probably cause of the tie.

I've seen enough of your posts know what you do, and which company you work for, so I do respect your opinion. Fact is I agree with you to some degree. But it's not like the OP is planning on waltzing in wearing an Armani suit. His description (boots, khakis, button up, sport coat, no tie) sounds like something a team roper from Marfa might wear to Church on Sunday. This appearance (respectful & yet still blue collar) is pretty dang appropriate for a MWD interview.

While I've never had a job that involved much hiring or recruiting, but I've worked in O&G long enough to know what to wear to an interview. And I'm plenty familiar with the job and your employer, probably more so than you are. I've never heard of managers rejecting people because they wore a tie. Sounds pretty ridiculous to me.

OP, you've got a couple of different opinions here, so just do what you think is best. In the end I don't think your choice of jacket type will make huge difference either way. That being said, if you and KT Ag08 have some kind relationship outside this forum and he personally knows the guy who will be interviewing you, follow his advice.

I thought I would get conflicting opinions. If it wasn't cold I wouldn't have to worry about it. The interview is going to be a few hours and there will be a tour, I'm thinking it should be all inside so it may not be too big of an issue. I may be able to get away with a long sleeve undershirt.

I don't know kt, I got the interview through my cousin. Although he doesn't know the person I talked to on the phone. And the company is a very large one.

I disagree also, just because you show up in nice looking clothes does not mean you plan on wearing them to do the job. It shows respect to the interviewer and that although your work clothes will be different, I am serious about getting hired and I take pride in myself and that will reflect my work ethic. But in reality if the guy likes you and your skills, then a jacket isnt going to make or brake the deal.

I wore khakis and a navy button up, no tie, to my interview with BHI. The manager interviewing me didn't seem to give a damn, however I had prior O&G experience on my resume. Just make it apparent that you're aware of the conditions somehow. Wear what feels right so you aren't questioning yourself on appearance.

O&G is about as dIverse an industry as there is. You'll be just fine.

I don't think I told him not to wear a sports coat. I told him he could get away with a fleece and be fine in something like this.

Like you said, my company is a diverse company in terms of personalities and expectations for interviews. I will be in my third role in 3 years starting next month and I have been fortunate enough to work in quite a few places with quite a few of those different personalities. Having worked very closely with the MWD folks though for a while I do believe I understand the dynamic during the debriefs and conversations after interviews. The fact was, they equated overdressing with a lack of understanding of what they were getting into. Do I agree with it - not really, but their perception is reality when they make a final call on hire vs. pass on candidates.

For the most part, the drilling side has a completely different mindset and personality than the completions group. I would say that at least with my employer those folks would prefer steel toes, khakis or nice jeans, and a Carhart over a button up as opposed to slacks and a tie in most cases. "He looks the part" was a determinant more than once.

Again, this is all just my 2 cents and as I mentioned above, I don't agree with it 100%.

In my interview, I wore a suit because I believe that is what you wear. I apologized to the interviewer for over dressing but I felt it was appropriate to wear a suit to a job interview. He agreed and we moved on. I made sure to explain that I fully understood the job and it's demands. It is all about how you handle it.

I work doing MWD and Im even out on a job now in New Mexico and I agree with KT_Ag08.

There is no need to over dress for an MWD job. You could probably get away a nice dress shirt and jeans but I dont think you will be disqualified for dressing nice.
