He'd be out of the house if he wanted to be I would think but maybe I'm wrong. Jobs in San Antonio, Midland, and Houston if he is in Texas. I'd start with Halliburton and service companies if your wanting him out quick. Call the field office in Midland or wherever and tell them you'd like to come out and discus any opportunities they have.

Oil is booming right now. If he had a high GPA, how did he not have a job already lined up?!

Yeah he should be able to get a job pretty easily. What does high GPA mean? Do you know if he interned or applied anywhere?

He had couple of jobs lined up with big oil companies but during his sophomore year he got a DWI (kids really learnt from it now). Its been years since that incident, I was hoping someone one here will be able to help him out since he is a really bright person with good gpa.

He's major gpa is 3.3 majored in petroleum engineering with a minor in mechanical engineering.

Not bad. Major gpa is 3.3 - USIA overall comparable? DW hurts - imagine it needs to be 5 years if you want a job that drives and that is a lot of them. Look for smaller companies.

You can minor in mechanical engineering? Didn't know they let you minor in meen.

Maybe the DWI hurts him? Not sure if companies care about that if it was years ago but maybe they would with the safety focus in the industry??

A lot of jobs require driving - that's the issue

If he's graduating in May, I probably know him. Tell him to go service, at least get in the field and learn

Have him send his resume to my username at att.net

There are equipment operators weve hired that have a dwi on their record, but its a timing thing. One engineer i know didnt get hired bc he got a dwi about 3 months before he applied. Driving is a major part of the service companies.

IMO a petro engineer should still be able to find a job even with a DWI. Don't let him limit himself because he got that, still try for all. Don't lie about it though when asked.

Does he have a driver's license? I wouldn't think it would be an issue, if he is upfront and honest about it. Companies are run by humans...they will understand.

His job right now is finding a job; treat it that way.

peteratm02 - Thanks a lot for your help in adv, the email has been sent

He got the DWI in 2009 and he graduated in 2011; even with the DWI on his record he landed interviews and offers from servicing companies such as Schlumberger and Halliburton. Both these companies knew about his DWI and still made the offer. He accepted Halliburton's field engineer position. 2 weeks before his start date they called him to say he couldn't pass the background check and because of his driving record he can't work for them.

He has his driver's license, it never got suspended. He has been looking for a job since but his driving record always turns out to be the problem.

I'd go for a smaller consulting firm or something like that - if they don't have an HR departments, odds are they won't do a background check.

My understanding is that background checks cost companies around $80 a pop. They don't do them before interviews ever from what I have seen. Once you accept the offer, they give you stuff to sign saying they can check anywhere and everywhere.

Find a place that doesn't need him driving and doesn't have HR. There are definitely companies that match those criteria but they are small and you will have to do some leg work to find the few that need people.

Another nice thing about smaller companies is they are able to "bend the rules" for him a lot easier than the giant behemoth companies.

How old was he when he got the DWI?

Hey guys,

I have a 3 year old DUI, and have an internship with a large service company this summer. I am pretty nervous, because it is a field engineering internship. I will be undergoing the background check process in a few weeks, and will let you all know if I get my offer rescinded or not.

Does anyone have any experience or input as to whether I will be rejected because of my driving record? (The DUI is not on my criminal record) Any input would be much appreciated, and I will post my experience once I undergo the background check.

Thank you guys

alxman,

How is it not on your record? Expunged? Were you convicted or did you plead it out to a lesser charge? I would think that if it's not on your record than it won't show up on a background check.

The DUI was in Orlando, FL, which has a pretrial diversion program. If you complete counseling, pay fines, and its your first offense they take it off your criminal record. It is still on my motor vehicle record however.

I should note that they do separate criminal and DMV records for this position

It's all about the insurability. He needs to be 5 yrs from the DWI. A good PETE still needs to make field visits for an operator. You're no good to a service company if you can't drive. I'd recommend a small independent or a engineering tech position until the record clears.

We may be hiring for a field/office rotation with young new grads.

I think many companies that would have you in a company truck would eliminate a candidate once they found out about a dwi. I work for an ind e&p and I'm pretty sure it would keep someone from getting hired if within quite a few years. I know getting one while employed is guaranteed to cost you your job here.

Do any of y'all have any advice for finding internships this late in the season for petroleum engineering? I've asked everyone I know for help but have had no luck thus far. I'm graduating in may 2014 and really don't want to be one of those graduates without any field experience
dallasag12

You can't graduate w/o an internship

Do they really not let kids graduate because of that?

Don't they just put you with a professor to be his research assistant to count as your internship?

Crag -

Yes.

AgCrag is right. I forgot about the research credit.
