I have seen my company do lay-offs before and the people get a days notice.
that's not abnormal. for our 3 rounds of layoffs, people found out in the morning and were walked to their desks to clean out and then to their car and were off the premises within an hour.
that's just the way it goes.
on to your original point: if the start date on your new job allows you to put in 2 weeks after your vacation, do that.
Always be prepared that they may choose to walk you out immediately after you giving your notice. It depends on the situation, but they are not required to allow you to work the 2 weeks. I've seen it happen both ways at my company, so it depends on the manager and the person giving notice.
