The one I liked came with a vest, coincidentally. I've never really though about wearing a vest with a suit, should I wear it to career fair/job interviews or not? I'm thinking not.

Maritime and/or Energy Industries.

No. Make them remember you as the guy with the good resume. Not the dork with the vest.

I've got a 3 piece suit that I tend to wear once a week during the winter to work...now that's spring's about here, it'll turn into a 2 piece suit

but people tend to distrust anything outside the norm (although this look is a classic), so I'd ditch the vest for interviews

I would definitely take the vest to a tailor and have him cut up the material and turn it into a cummerbund and an ascot.

If I saw you at a (engineering) career fair with a suit, I would immediately think you're an arrogant ***** who I don't want to work with. Then again, I've heard that at the business career fair, it's expected.

Pretty sure everyone(80%) that I saw at the Engr career fair was in suits, also what the career center tells you to do.

Last time I went I thought it ran more along the lines of button up shirts, maybe ties, but no coats.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt to someone who comes off as 'this is what everyone told me to wear so I'm being cautious' but not someone who acts as if they're a better candidate because they're better dressed.

I would go with the vest. It is always best to be over dressed. Just for good measure you should probably get a top hat and cane to complete to outfit.

ditch the vest and don't fasten the bottom button on your coat.

It's an engineering career fair, if you're not a dork/geek/nerd of some sort, we'll probably think you're an imposter.

And to be fair, I should note that my company is extremely casual compared to most. My first supervisor here had a mohawk. If you come out here for an on-site interview we actually tell you to not wear a tie.

Burn the vest.

Vests are good if you're working somewhere internationally in my opinion. In the US, vests are fairly uncommon in my experience. You'll just look like you're trying to hard. But then again, I think a dress shirt and tie without a jacket looks tacky.

Wow, I just checked back on this thread. Very entertaining. I really have no intention of wearing the vest, certainly not to fair/interview. Some really good/funny answers though.

And I agree with whoever said that a tie with no jacket looks tacky.

btw; picking it up from Men's Warehouse tonight... vest and all. I had a very small budget and it's the only navy one they had that I could afford.

How much did you have to spend? Brooks Brothers Factory stores is a great place to find good deals on a nice suit. I picked up an complete 1818 suit for around 200 tailored during a sale.
Campfire Soul

About 300 tailored. I was looking to spend around 250. Considering I might need to wear it once I'm employed, I didn't mind going over a bit.

I'd really rather not have to wear a suit to work everyday, at least not if I live in the heat of Texas. But I find it funny how ~elitist(?) some folks come off on TA regarding the dress code at their job. I'm not calling out anyone in particular. But some of you guys really come off like you or your job is far superior to mine/everyone elses job because you get to wear jeans to work. I'm not ranting here, it's just a weird observation.

oh, and career fair was yesterday... there were a handful of people wearing suits. Mostly folks who are MARA (maritime business administration) were in the suits. The engineering students were all in black pants, dress shirts and ties. And the science majors were wearing either jeans, or gym shorts.

NONE of the recruiters were wearing suits, most were in jeans and polos.

Who said anything about getting all dressed up fancy-like in jeans? Save those for special occasions like lunch at Denny's or the Waffle House. That would be an unnecessary step in the business process only hurting efficiency: Roll out of bed, Make Coffee, ?????, Profit.

sadly i would be willing to wager half the males on texags still have corps/military hair cuts and tuck their shirts into their jean shorts while accenting the ensemble with a braided belt.
