I am a freshman Biology major thinking about switching to BMEN. Anyone, have any thoughts on the program? Also, I might be looking to go to med school. Any input is appreciated.

Walk 100 feet from the Biochem building to Wehner, go upstairs to the UPO, and switch to Business. There's still time.

There is a thread on what we think of the program .. basically as long as you get through the CBKs with a high enough GPA you are set, because BMEN is a grade inflation major to ensure that you have a strong application for med school, and if you dont go to med school at least you will have good grades, even if you learned absolutely nothing.

if you get at least a 3.5+ in your CBKs I would say you are set.

(fyi BMEN is my major)

make sure that you have a strong grasp of calculus and physics. I started off in BMEN, but switched to BIMS because I almost failed both Math 151 and Phys 218. if you don't think you have a strong grasp, but want to be prepared for med school, you can try BIMS. BIMS will actually give you classes that you will see again in med school. anatomy and physiology, just like the vet students take. micro, mammalian genetics (none of that Mendel peas and flies crap), biochem, all that. the electives are diverse, so you can tailor your junior and senior years to what you actually want to do. one word of caution: BIMS is totally a stepping stone degree. you really can't do anything with it by itself. BELIEVE ME, I've tried and now I'm waiting on an acceptance letter to nursing school.

Talk to the BMEN academic advisor. I can provide his contact information if you need it.

I would suggest that you speak with someone over in that department since there is a good possibility that you will hit a ceiling without more than a bachelors.

But if you are thinking premed, that it probably doesn't matter.

You are right Mushasi

To be a PI on medical devices you had better be at least a PhD or MD if not a PhD-MD, so there is definately a ceiling for engineers that way. But as the guy said, hes looking premed, so I didnt bring it up.

I did BMEN then med school. It helps a lot with getting into medical school but not so much after you're accepted. When I was there I don't think the grading was too far out from the other disciplines. Everyone in BMEN had to have at least a 3.25 in the CBK courses so it's not surprising that those same people would get good grades in upper level courses. That being said the only A's I made in upper level courses were in Hyman's classes, and senior design.

I love Hyman. 86% of his 600-700 students got A's.

Mind telling me what your pre-med gpa/overall gpa were?

My pre-med gpa was a 3.8 i think and my overall was a 3.4

I started in BMEN but only lasted a year so I can't really comment on it. But I wound up in BIMS and went to med school. If you're sure you want to go to meds school, I wouldn't trouble yourself with BMEN. The nonengineering math and science classes are dumbed down (though still challenging) and there are enough typical college students in them to bank on a curve usually. Med schools these days really like folks who major in something they like and can talk about at the interview that has nothing to do with medicine. You just have to take the pre-reqs and have a decent GPA - I studied hard for my core classes at A&M and took the weird stuff like POLS, History, English, Soc, Psych at Summer school either Blinn or back home.
