Our daughter is in 5th grade, one of the younger ones in her class, and is struggling a bit with her reading speed, comprehension, and recall. Teachers are aware and she does get some extra tutoring once a week. She has a slight hearing disability and wears hearing aids. She gets a little extra time on classwork when needed.

It's a beating helping her with reading homework, or any homework that requires a lot of reading (history, science).

She reads nightly and is starting to enjoy it and read more on her own. She has good grades (As and Bs) in most classes but hovers in Cs for a couple. She really struggles when doing quizzes and tests that require a quick turnaround on answers.

Teacher and principle say she is right at average and is improving. NWEA testing shows she's a bit below average and growth curve is below average.


Any suggestions on strategies we can try at home for helping her improve reading speed, comprehension, and recall?

We were looking at Sylvan and Learning Rx in San Antonio.

We used a certified Orton-Gilliam reading coach. My daughter's reading speed and comprehension improved a lot after completing their program.

I don't have any technical help, but along with whatever tutoring assistance you get, find as much good but fun reading for her as you can. The more time she's actually reading, the more she should improve in any system. There are tons of great series out there for preteens and teens, and if she is having fun reading, it is a lot easier to want to put in the effort.

Keep finding her things she likes to read...the more she practices, the better.

One of our kiddos would rush through his books, and struggles with retention/comprehension. It was suggested he read quietly out loud to himself, and it didnt take long before that helped him. Might be worth a try while she's reading at night.

My daughter set all kinds of accelerated reading program records in Elementary school. She became a voracious reader where we had to peel off books from her during dinner and bedtime. It all started with a book called Warrior cats.

We bought her the first book and she had to read em all. I think there are like 30 books in the series.

We'd go to Barnes and noble and she'd have read the whole book in the store while I drank coffee and looked though magazines. Then she jumped on to another series of books and on and on.

Then my son went through the same reading habits.

That was our approach by accident.

I don't think there's a substitute for reading a lot of books.
