My son is starting in the fall in engineering. They have Recommended Technology Devices. Looks to range from a $1500 HP to a Microsoft Surface to some much more expensive Dells. Anyone with current or incoming engineering students have recommendations on this?

Thanks

Those requirements basically mean get a new windows laptop. IMO, brand name isn't that big of deal in pcs , they all have so many configurations it's better to just look at the specs to see if they have what you are looking for. I typically look at slickdeals to see what is the best deal going currently. Comments section will typically point out the worst part of any particular offer.

This one looks pretty good…

If there's a chance your son will pursue computer science I'd suggest considering a Mac. Many CS students like them because of the ease of command line Unix access and the tools. Of course windows machine will work too. If not considering CS, a beefy windows machine is important to run CAD. Source: my son graduated in CS last year and I'm an engineering prof.
