Without being considered a "college student"?

My son has the potential to get about 30 hours of dual credit from classes he's taking in high school. Is there a limit on dual credit hours that you can transfer into A&M?

He's already academically qualified via SAT.

Also, are these hours separate from credits earned by taking AP Exams?

We go strictly by the definitions of applicant type that are listed on our web site. For example, at http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshman/apply you will see: "You are a freshman if you:
  • are a student without college credit or
  • earned college credit prior to high school graduation (dual credit/early college high school)"

So the number of college hours while still enrolled in high school does not change the definition of a domestic freshman.

https://compassxe-ssb.tamu.edu/HCA/ssb/transferCourseEquivalency/#!/ shows how all his dual credit classes would transfer to A&M. The main concern is that some applicants might not get certain offers (such as Gateway or Blinn TEAM if they have too many hours).

https://testing.tamu.edu/TestingServices/media/Media/PDFs/AP.pdf shows the scores you have to get to get AP credit for the class. Note where it says "Students must consult their academic advisor for advise on the number of credits that can be used in their degree program to avoid excessive credit accumulation and possible negative effects." That is done at the New Student Conference.

Since each student's background is different, your son really should call an admissions counselor at 979-458-0950 to discuss his particular situation and what his best course of action is.

Our's enters college the Fall after high school with over 60 hours of college credit.

It will be interesting to see how his schedule unfolds, how these hours are applied to his degree and what options he chooses with his time as an undergraduate.

Five hours from a dual credit with ACC didn't work, so the boy is four hours shy of being a junior before he starts in the Fall. Not too shabby.

The utility of AP/dual credit hours varies greatly by major. You may get credit for the state-mandated core, but even though you may be a junior by hours, don't expect to graduate in only two years.

You also need to be careful if you are unsure about degree, most colleges have max hour limits for transferring, ie 40 or more hours no transfer.

My incoming freshman was told to hold her 15 hours until she was sure of major then apply them since she can use them anytime.

After student orientation advising and registration, he is four hours shy of junior classification. He does not plan to graduate in two years. He is going for comprehensive honors, study abroad and looking to maximize research. Plans may change.

He had fourteen hours more than applied to his degree plan and had three AP's that don't have AP exams. All three of those AP classes are classes in his degree plan, organic chemistry, multi variable calculus and linear algebra.

That's too bad that some kids don't get credit for their work. That was a part of the college selection process for our's.

Kid finalized his four year plan. He is going for two degrees and a minor with one degree honors and university honors. He wants to get the most he can, as usual.
