Academic Suspension, What Now (I Wish to Return)?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Long story short, I didn't do so hot for my first semester at Texas A&M. I ended up with 2 F's, 1 D, 1 C, & 1 B. In retrospect I should have Q-Dropped, but I was foolish in believing I could turn it around. My study habits were clearly not ready, but I was hoping to correct that. But unfortunately I was denied General Studies. They said I could go to Blinn & reapply next semester, but they didn't see it as likely. After talking to numerous advisors, I've sent an application to Blinn for their staggered 8-week classes so I can keep learning & hopefully get myself back on track. Is there anything else that I can or should do to make sure I can get back to A&M & regain good academic standing? I was originally a freshman undergraduate Physics major who was hoping to transfer into Computer Engineering. I didn't party or anything, though I didn't have very many friends with whom I could study with & I avoided any and all clubs in fears of this very scenario. Clearly that didn't work out, & now I feel nothing but stress and uncertainty of what I can do next.

Hang in there. Study hard at blinn, do your best, and reapply.

If you can't get back in, it's not the end of the world. Plenty of people slip up at major universities and end up transferring. If you are persistent and keep a positive attitude, success is inevitable in college and long after.

The reason for the lack of optimism by the advisor is the large deficit for SAP and point wise you know face moving forward. It would be basically impossible for you to go on probation, and be in good academic standing after a single term.

The best thing to do is get working, get studying, and figure out what went wrong. If the courses were moving to fast, A&M might not be the place for you. Nothing wrong with realizing something doesn't align with your long term goals. It's better to go somewhere and succeed vs. Getting back in then failing out again. That'd be a killer.

What level undergraduate are you/how many competed hours?

Do Blinn for a semester or two and keep in touch with some (re)admission advisors. Make the grades and show them you can do work to get back into school.

Don't set your hopes on getting right into Look for Computer Engineering, but keep your goals manageable. General Studies or some less popular, less difficult department.

I failed out of A&M once upon a time and was told by the College of Science undergrad dean there was basically no way in hell I'd ever graduate from Texas A&M. Today I have two degrees, one being a master's from Mays.

Keep your head up.

This may seem like I'm picking apart 3rdCoastAg, but my only intention is to relay how the readmission process currently works at TAMU.

It's fine to keep in touch with one of our counselors, but the readmission decision is made by the department to which you apply. All we can really do is help you navigate the actual application process.

Students are NO longer allowed to apply to General Studies (Freshman, Transfer, Readmit, etc.). If you decide to apply for readmission, you must select a degree-granting program. We NEVER recommend applying for something you think you can get into with the hopes of moving to what you really want. While TAMU will never prevent you from trying, there is no guarantee. Our advice would be to pound the pavement, knock on some doors and try to find a department that's willing to work with you. If you do find such a department, please be prepared to finish that degree if/when you are readmitted.

As #Gadgets alluded to, it may be very difficult for any department to assist you simply because of your poor academic record.

I will echo everyone's sentiments about keeping your head up. You may not be able to finish a degree at TAMU, but there are many great schools out there.

I hope this helps!

I can't speak for anyone specifically, but I know when I worked with Don Curtis in Liberal Arts, the best way to gain readmisson was to show how you identified the original issue, overcame the issue, and benefitted/grew from the experience. If you leave with a sub 2.0 and especially if you bomb to the point you will need a probation over ride to essentially map progress across multiple probation periods, you MUST complete courses from another institution and do very well.

I remember one student who "left" with maybe a .8 GPA was given readmission because of the strength of his subsequent activities. I believe he joined the reserves to learn about commitment and help gain personal discipline and "grow up", completed 24+ hours at an accredited Texas 2 year university, and volunteered extensively.

Nothing is impossible, some things are just much more difficult. Regardless, learn from the experience and take the opportunity to turn a negative into a positive.

I know Dr. Curtis is no longer in the CLLA, but he still works for the university. He has extensive knowledge about how you to position yourself most effectivly for readmission. Maybe an email to him wouldn't hurt?

I'm fairly sure Dr. Curtis is still in CLLA...

I just checked and you are correct. He is now in the honors department, not the undergraduate programs office.

I just checked and actually you're correct. Looks like he's moving over out of CLLA soon.

So basically I painted myself into a wall because of one bad semester. Anyway, I've already spoke with Theatre & they said they may take me if I can prove that I've bettered myself over at Blinn, but they've recommended that I take the semester off. So basically I need to get really good grades over at Blinn. I've also spoken with Physics & that they may be able to take me back if I prove myself over at Theatre, & the previous Theatre advisor said that they would be okay with me lowering Theatre to a minor eventually. As for my Engineering goal, my Physics advisor said it's not impossible since I just had one bad semester, but I have to make that point clear in my eventual essay to the College of Engineering & drive the point home that I've made great strides to move past that semester since then.

If you go from a scholastic readmit in non-dropped major (you are readmitted to a different department) to Theatre to Physics, I don't want to be rude, but ENGE will 99.99% not take you as it'd be a 3rd change of major and each across a different college. Most departments, especially ENGE, do not like students that play hop scotch across majors. I think the key here is talking to the correct advisor. The only people that can speak for ENGE on a transfer basis are the advisor in the various ENGE depts.

So my best bet is to talk straight to the source, correct?
MaysAggie2015
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes. Talk to the ENGE department you will be seeking transfer admission/COC into. They can give you a much better representation of your chances of a COC from Theatre to Physics to ENGE. It would really be unfortunate to put in the work, and have it discounted because of incorrect advice from an academic advisor. If it were me, I would talk to each about direct readmission. If that isn't possible then be honest with each about your plan. It is much easier to formula a degree plan for a student when you know their intentions. Best of luck, it sounds like you will be a great student wherever you end up enrolling.

Physics said they likely won't reaccept me straight, & that I'd have to prove myself in another major before I can come back. I assume the same will apply with Computer Engineering, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

MaysAggie2015
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If I were you, I would contact ENGE first, then physics then theatre. After talking with all of them you will have a better idea of the viability of your plan and the necessary next steps. Be honest with them about your intentions.

I say start backwards because your goal is to make in into Look, not make it back into the university for another major. If ENGE tells you not a shot, there is no sense spinning your wheels with theatre and physics.

Best of luck!

I thought you got put on Scholastic Probation after doing poorly your first semester at A&M, and got kicked out if you continued failing in the Spring? Is this not a thing anymore?

It depends on how bad you bomb the fall

That's what I thought too. I bombed my first semester (1.9 I think) but didn't get kicked out.

I read your post about your suspension from a&m. I find myself in the same position the semester. Being a bit lost at this point I am not sure what to do next . I was wondering what your outcome was and if you could give me any advice I appreciate it greatly.

From my own personal experience, do a year at blinn and get as close to a 4.0 as you can. If your problem was not studying enough or being distracted by video games, not only would your grades show that's changed, but be prepared to talk about it or write a short essay on it and what you have changed in your life.

Find classes that are in the core curriculum and would apply to any major you are thinking about taking. History, English, Fed and Texas Govt, college algebra or Trig.

I don't believe college algebra and trig will be what you need for A&M. When I was there, it was a minimum of Business Calc 1&2.
