How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am currently a sophomore at a college preparatory school in Texas, so I'm wondering what kind of scores and grades I would need to get in to A&M(not blinn team). Also I'm not sure if it makes a difference but everyone in my family has gone to A&M and my brother is currently there. Also I would be interested in the Corps of Cadets if that helps. So where does my GPA need to be and what scores do I need on SAT/ACT. Thanks alot.

I'm guessing 1300+ gets you in almost for sure and you could get in with 1150+ if everything else is good. Just a rough guess. I imagine you can google and find better info.

TAMU looks at two big academic criteria; class rank and test scores. If your high school does not rank, TAMU will use your GPA in relation to your school's grading scale and create a quartile ranking for you. That being said, if you rank in the top quarter (either by your school or by TAMU) and you have at least a 1300 SAT (Math plus Critical Reading, with at least 600 in each section), TAMU will admit you automatically (ACT minimum is 30 with at least 27 in the Math and English sections).

If you don't qualify for automatic admission, you will fall into what's called holistic review. TAMU still considers your class rank/test scores, but they also look at your extracurricular activities and your admission essays. The most competitive applicants in this pool come from the top quarter of their class and have at least a 1250 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT. There is, however, no guarantee.

There is a place on the application to discuss affiliations you have with TAMU (family members, tours, etc.), but legacy does not carry as much weight as it used to.

Your admission to the Corps is contingent upon your admission to the university.

I hope this helps!

Aggie,

Based on this last year the class ranking and test scores played a major role in our decision process. You will need to work hard and make good grades to have a strong class ranking as well as strong test scores. If you can reach the Academic Admissions, http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshmen/gettingin/waysAdmitted/academic.aspx, requirements you will be able to get in automatically. If you fall in our review pool you need to be strong in both the personal and academics merit sections.

Also legacy carry's no weight in our process anymore. The only thing you can specificity on the application is how you have visited campus and that plays a very small role in the process.

Since you are s sophomore and almost a junior I would strongly recommend making a trip up to campus to learn more about the process. If you go to http://visit.tamu.edu/ you can set up a campus visit. Be sure to attend a Freshmen session, as this session goes over the entire application process.

It differs in that it is hardcore preparatory. That isn't true of most public schools.

This is a very informative post.

Duncan:How is this "commercial" kitchen different from a regular kitchen?

My only advice is to actually study for the SAT/ACT. My student did not, made a 1470/33 on SAT/ACT and that was not high enough for a scholarship. In fact, he just recently got admitted into the college of his choice. He now wishes he had studied. A perfect score still may not have gotten him a scholarship, but we have to wonder . . .

a college prep school is usually private. They generally don't offer vocational courses. They do a good deal of homework, as much as many colleges, and their coursework tends to be fast paced. They read more literature. They offer four years of foreign language.

oh and they have fancy buildings and sometimes do things like swimming or lacrosse instead of football.

And I didn't go to a prep school, but I am involved in admissions.

And that doesn't mean you can't do as well as a college prep kid. It just takes some work ethic. Desire.

VandZant is spot on, except we play football here. And yeah it's a private school. Does being at a prep school have any advantage for getting accepted?

A&M does not look at where you went to school. We look at how you have preformed at your school, via your class rank.

So A&M would not know what school is more difficult than most? Sorry for so many questions.

We do not compare schools. We will just look at how you preform in relation to your peers at your school.

Note to self: when kid gets old enough, transfer to lowest performing school in area.

Many people 'play that game'. I think it's still more beneficial for a student to challenge himself/herself during high school; I believe that will translate into success in college, wherever the student ends up (of course, there is a learning curve from high school to college no matter where you go to high school).

Typical with today's society...under performers are rewarded at the expense of the performers.

My Mom has taught at DeSoto High School since the mid '70's. the kid graduating now is nowhere near as prepared as the kid graduating in the early '90's. Likewise, todays top 10% DeSoto grad is not even in the same ballpark as a below average Jesuit grad or any North Dallas County school grad.

Well DeSoto does produce good football players. It has definitely lost it's academic reputation... administration chased away all the great teachers. Kinda sad... and pathetic. I am sure college graduation rates are low for kids coming out of these type schools... but I don't really know the statistics on this. I would imagine that these "top quarter" kids suck away slots from more capable students and end up never obtaining a college degree. It's actually a travesty for society in general.

I reckon if you have money for a college prep school, you have money for TCU or another school. A public institution doesn't have time to parse these things out.

Send your kid to the best school possible. If a&m doesn't want them, Southwestern or trinity will.
