I've heard mixed things about 4.0 and Go. That some profs consider it academic dishonesty, that it doesn't help at all, that it helps a lot, etc.

I'm in Mktg 409 and struggling with all the information and all the nit-picky details. Has anyone been to 4.0 for MKTG 409 (or any business-related class that's not problem-based and more concept-based)? Does it help? Is it a waste of money? What are your thoughts?

Also, why is it considered academic dishonesty.... what makes 4.0 different than Tutorjohn or A+?

If you are taking 409 with pride, read the book. It is the test. Going to 4.0 isnt going to do a lick of good.

The guy wrote the book. The test is about what he wrote. Its that simple.

Agreed. I took the class and it's something you just have to sit down for and memorize everything you can. 4.0 & Go isn't helpful for those types of classes.

That's my $0.02

I know this has been said a billion times, but I'm going to say it again -

I've never understood the idea of paying for tutoring when you are already paying for the class. There are tons of people taking that class right now, no? Go talk to some people, even if they are total strangers, and set up a study group. Offer to buy them pizza. If they suck at helping you, find someone else. It might take a week or two to find the right group but those people will be a billion times more helpful to you than a "how to take the tests in this class" service.

Never understood why 4.0 & Go utilized their sessions the day before the exam. Thinking back on it, I never would have wasted my money there. Only good for math based classes, but still a couple of days before the exam and always around midnight. Dumb.

Another observation... All the party animals loved 4.0 & Go. They felt they could skip class and still eventually learn the material.

Talk to the prof. Go to the library, find a quiet corner, and study.

4.0 and go is good for people who skip class, or who generally have trouble studying by themselves.

For me, I use it as a study tool. I have a huge problem with waiting until the night before, then trying to learn everything by myself. That doesn't work. If I go to 4.0, it more or less forces me to study ahead of time, plus they know exactly what's going to be on the test, so they know what to teach you.

I use it pretty often, and really love it. (Although I DON'T love paying for it)

A+ Tutoring got me through Physics 208 and Math 152.

Very valuable. I don't think I could have done it without.

Professors don't teach, they profess. A+ had the teachers that could explain much better than the Physics Prof with the Russian accent I couldn't get past.

4.0 saved my life in a chem class with a rotten prof who covered a ridiculous amount of material (it was his first time teaching it, and he didn't seem to know what it was supposed to cover so he taught everything). That's the only class I attended 4.0 for regularly. I dropped in a couple times for math and physics classes my fish year when I felt that I was behind on the material (mostly due to having a bunch of tests/projects at once).

It's the difference between a professional teacher whose job depends on being very good at teaching and a research professor who usually does not want to waste his time in a classroom. You will benefit from going, the only question is whether you actually need to go. Many students treat it as an alternative to hard work rather than a supplement, and that is the wrong way to approach a tutoring service.

I used these services years and years ago and found them to be helpful in learning how to study. during my first semester, i felt that i could review my homework and notes a day or two before the exam and do well. but that only got me so far ...

studying additional problems, concepts up to a week before the exam taught me how to do well. after a few semesters of these services, i learned how to study on my own.

I always liked A+ better than 4.0 and go.

1. Profs teach class as a means to an end; i.e., they are researchers first, consultants second, and teachers a distant third. The result is a crap product. Most profs in lower division aren't good teachers. We pay for the class because it is required.

2. Tutors are efficient in that they teach the fundamental idea that answers the questions on the exam. Profs teach theory and derivations that typically don't help much on exams. If we had an Oxford tutoring system theory and derivations would be useful. Or if TAMU had recitation sessions taught by someone other than an indentured servant/grad assistant with an understanding of English beyond what the guy who mows my lawns, maybe people wouldn't have to pay.

3. Using 4.0 and A+ is a form of studying.

Hombre knocked this one out of the park.

When people who go to class, take notes, pay attention get Cs, Ds, or Fs on tests and the same person goes to A+ or 4.0 and go and then gets As and Bs. That solely rests on the instructor and/or way the material is being taught.

Profs hate teaching, the ones that love it don't do research and are funded by the other ones.

To answer your question about academic dishonesty, the only prof I have heard say something like that is Swim. He doesn't like those services because he has copy rights on all of his material and they use them without his permission.

Me personally, I never used them. Went to class (most of the time) and if I didn't understand it I would use the book or make a friend in the class that knew what they were doing. Much cheaper to do that.

Agree with the poster above that said that the hardcore partiers swear by the services. Didn't make much sense to me though because the tutoring sessions would be late at night which would cut into partying time. If they just went to class during the day then they could spend the night partying instead of sitting in tutoring.

I cant help much about 4.0, but i know without A+ i would not have made it to my upper level EE classes. Everyone is different and benefits from tutuoring a different way. I benefitted greatly from A+

i always had good experiences with 4.0 when i was working on my minor wet to them for all of the classes except info. Doug is an awesome guy and the class helps alot as an aid not your sole source of studying.

You must have had YURI! If you are talking about Rostovsev....holy carp...i feel your pain. The ONLY physics class I took...or any class really, where my class score was a 34 and I ended up with a B+.....I literally asked him for a B before grades went in and he said "sure, why not, you tried all the homework".....yeah...wtf...

I can't recall which I used...whatever was over by fatburger on northgate....that place was the bomb. I did not study well on my own and attended every single class and review session that was offered on top of getting help from the professor. The fact is, some students are as bad at studying and learning as their professors are at teaching. This is extremely evident in the hard sciences. Study services taught me how to solve the problems. The professors failed at it. Professors that have a problem with A+ or 4.0 can stick it up their self absorbent piss poor teaching skilled ass as far as Im concerned. Whoopdeedo...so you wrote a book. Maybe if your teaching skills were worthwhile, 4.0 wouldnt be using your material to do your job. those professors arent worried about copyright, they are having an ego crisis that someone else is a more effective teacher than they are.

Thats my take on it.

A+ really helped me out with my PHYS 218 class. It really helped me understand it as well as do pretty well on the exam. The first test I didn't use it and I got an A. This was mainly because it was the first test, I wasn't fairly busy yet with school work and so I studied like a week in advance of the exam. I realized this can no longer be done a couple weeks before the next one and started going to A+. Attended the 12-2am sessions and I said..."This is college."

Good times. lol. I should've hit up Mickey Ds after.

And for those that go to 4.0 and Go for Calc I and II are vagines. Calc III and Diff EQ, you can get by without it.

Profs put out a lot of material online that will help you pass the exam. Old exams, notes, tutorial videos etc.

Doug is awesome but with 8 a.m classes every morning, I'll probably head over to A+ this semester. A lot of sessions at 4.0 tend to be later at night.

One of my professors mentioned that 4.0 and Go is now barred from distributing fliers on campus due to cheating tools that have been provided to students.

If true, that's pretty shameful.
