I can't say for 205 but for 203, there were 4 essays over the semester and one final which wasn't that bad. This was with Dr. Street.

Note, it depends on your TA on how you are graded. Some TA's didn't give a single A, while others gave them out a little more freely. I was lucky to have a great TA. Other than that, you show up to class every day to hear your classmates on recitation days (twice a week). You have one lecture day a week where we had a quiz over the weekly reading. Sometimes they weren't even over reading material and were essentially attendance sheets. I got a 100 on each of them reading the material right before class. You have to put work into the speeches, but you will no matter the prof.

I can't say for 205, but I took 203 last year in the spring. It was with a prof that is no longer here, so obviously some of this may not be applicable but oh well. 203 is public speaking so you have to do a lot of work for the speeches. Outlines and powerpoints and such. Plus practicing and memorizing them so that you know what you're doing when you go up there. It's definitely not a blow-off class. In my class, we had pop quizzes over most of the chapters and then we had a midterm and a final which were really easy. The only bad thing about 203 is that it's really subjective. I mean they have a rubric but ultimately it's up to the prof to decide whether or not it was a good speech and how tough they want to grade you. I think only 1 A was ever given on a speech... and my class had really good public speakers in it. I wound up with a B, but I had to really work at the speeches. So be careful of that if you decide to take it and you're wanting to not do a lot of work because in my experience it was quite a bit of work.

Don't know what Mars is talking about with the essays, but 203 is a public speaking course and I took it last semester.

In this course you have one day with Dr. Street and then two days with the TA. Your grade is essentially made up of 4 speeches.

I would not recommend this class. There are better alternatives to getting your COMM credit. This class is 4 pressure packed speeches that you have to memorize and perform in front of the class with little error. My TA in particular was a very difficult grader (you have to realize that these TA's want a good grade distribution so they dont have your interest in mind) and really harshly graded you.

You don't really learn how to improve your speeches from listening in class..... It's basically trial and error. You're going to get up there for speech I, and like the rest of the class, your probably going to get a C, therefore making it extremely difficult to pull off an A for the semester. Basically your going to have to adjust some things from what YOU learned you did wrong and hope it gets better for speech II.

These were my grades for the 4 speeches:

Speech 1-79
Speech 2-77
Speech 3-95
Speech 4-91

Cut throat class, avoid. Hope I helped.

When I said essays, I meant the public speaking outlines. Sorry for the confusion.
