As a Finance major, I'd agree that Accounting is at least a little bit harder, but not a LOT harder. No idea how hard info is compared to those 2...

If you study enough and go to tutoring at 4.0/TJ, it is managable. It isn't easy, but its the kind of major where studying a ton usually results in good grades...Couldn't say the same about my 1 semester en engineering...

finance is where the cool kids are

accounting is where the kids who want to be cool, but are kinda nerdy end up

info is where the nerds who know they're nerds end up

management is where the kids with no idea what they want to do end up

marketing is where the hot girls who are as stupid as the day is long end up

Too bad for the cool when they learn that they'll be working for the accountants unless their grades are good enough to get into IB.

Do PPA and get a Masters in Finance if it's something you really enjoy.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to take a job in accounting if you do PPA...

Although don't do the PPA if you hated your acct classes.

Is PPA the ONLY way you can get an M.S. in finance? Why isnt there a 5 year track where you get your undergrad in info and your M.S. in finance?

And even lower level business cbks are still way harder than core curriculum. I got a 3.6 fish year in core curriculum classes. This semester I only got a 3.25, and one of my As was in oceanography.

No, but as someone with an MS in finance (via the PPA) who has been in the real world a while, I would strongly urge anyone who wants a graduate degree in finance not via the PPA program and who doesn't want to become a PhD in finance to wait a few years and get an MBA with a finance concentration from a good school.

The market doesn't really understand or value business masters that aren't an MBA. Why? I wish I knew too, but that's the way it is. Academia does, but the business world doesn't.

I wish like hell there was. It doesn't make much sense that we don't have one.

The 5 year track at A&M, and every other school that has one, was created for the express purpose of attracting bright students who need the academic qualifications to sit for the CPA exam.

You want to double major in info and finance? By all means do so. But there is no reason to create a 5 year program for it.

Also, A&M is the only school that I know of (and I know of a lot) that offers a 5 year MS in something other than accounting (although I've been out of Texas a while, so some of the Texas school may have followed suit in the meantime.)

I'm pretty sure Texas and Tech both have 5 year programs other than accounting. Thats why.

I just checked. Texas doesn't have a info/finance 5 year bba/ms track and I could honestly give a flying flip what the tards do.
tamuags08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have no link, and it looks like that particular program doesn't exist. But why? Why can we have the accounting track but not an info/finance/etc track that allows people to get their bachelors and masters degrees?

Its a moot point. I'm graduating in May with an Info degree, and making good money. I'm just saying I think it might be something to look into.
Ol Jock 99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
again, because the ENTIRE POINT of the 5 year PPA program is the CPA exam.
tamuags08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Keep posting that point, I get it. I'm just saying there are other schools out there that DO have 5 year programs for their other majors. Besides that, not every person I know who has entered PPA has done so to get their CPA.

Maybe I was the only non-accounting major who wishes he could have done a PPA-like program, but I HIGHLY doubt it.
Bobby Light
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ol Jock is right. The Masters degree you get with PPA is irrelevant. You stick around another year to get to 150 hours to qualify to sit for the CPA exam...

tamuags08

BTW Ol' Jock: With your original point, MBA > MS, I agree. I've talked to several people, compared starting salaries, etc, and it really doesn't seem like MS is worth it.

I just have deep respect for the PPA program, for all the activities, advising, recruiting, etc they get, I'd really like to experience that as an Info major. Just one man's opinion.
Ol Jock 99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Well, here's why (in my opinion) it doesn't make as much sense of other majors. The PPA program has a whole separate administrative group to manage the program, recruit students, make sure everyone is in line with the requirements (namely the CPA exam), manage the recruiting process and maintain relations with the alumni of the program. It is a whole lot more than just a quick way to a masters.

Since finance and info don't have the same requirements or process, it doesn't make financial sense for the university to incur the added administrative costs.
tamuags08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'd be willing to bet that the extra year-year and a half of tuition paid by each student covers that extra "administration costs".

All in all, I appreciate that you kept the conversation intellectual and courteous. Thats not something you see everyday on TexAgs.

Jock has been pretty spot on with what he is talking about. If I recall he worked/is working for Big 4, but moved on to something else. He is usually very good with his info when it comes to accounting stuff. I am a current PPA student. Im on the MIS track and pretty sure I want to do public accounting with Big 4 for awhile after I get out. Other people on the MIS track though go into consulting and other stuff that really doesnt involve that much real accounting work. As has been previously stated, the 5 year program is so you can get your school done to sit for the CPA. I would highly suggest the program even if you dont want to do mostly accounting work. Just having the two degrees and the CPA behind your name is a big upgrade to your marketability, even if you arent doing accounting work.

Great troll Rook... B+.

You would've gotten an A but it wasn't as virulent as it could be. Good job on focusing in on accounting/finance instead of Econ/Agecon... that lessened the potential for an all-out brawl.

Well done sir.

Yeah its actually a good troll all around.

I was tempted more than once to make a crack about the difficulty of the business school in general, but decided to abstain.

Don't you know how many dudes are in engineering and how many hot girls are in Mays?

Do you know that engineers average starting salaries aren't THAT much higher than those for finance and accounting?

You guys are all getting ripped off....way harder classes, way more dudes...not that much mroe money.

no wonder we have so many bitter engineers over here
