Taking the class now and heard it's PPA weed out class. Professor told us the first day that this would be the hardest class we take at A&M for accounting and joked that we would miss basketball games because we would need to study for the class.

Any of you who have finished the class have any advice and tips on how to do well in the class?

dont bull**** yourself. it is hard. get that in your mind from day one (which has already passed so catch up).

do your reading. there are few classes i will say its really worth it in, that is one of them.

visit your prof when you are stuck. they are hardassed about the class but are always willing to help. you might not get the answer that you want but they are usually giving it to you cause its going to make you think.

dont go out drinking or dicking off the night before class. on that note, make sure you are at every class and paying attention.

stay disciplined is really what it is all about. your tests are going to be really hard, but you already know that.

if you keep up with the material you should be fine. the studying for test time should be review and really getting into the details. they will rip your head off with reading comp and getting all the details right (always read what year you are in and then think about it). to get the detail you are going to have to mess it up a few times. dont kill yourself when you get frustrated, just stick with it. its a tough semester with that class, but when you get through it its awesome. hang in there. if you have major issues pm me and i can help you out.

you dont have perry though so you dont even know hard

meh, it is hard, but not THAT hard. just stay caught up and you can still enjoy life. get behind and prepare to reap the whirlwind.

It's not that bad guys.

Don't get me wrong, an A is tough, but a B is not. If you can't get a B maybe accounting isn't for you.

I will say 327 is a tough class, but it is not the toughest class in the PPA program.

I took some pretty rough ones.

An a requires alot of work, a B doesn't , don't stress that much, if you just do the required hw before the tests you have at least a solid B. I'll second what a poster above me said in that if you can't make a B in 327 w/o killing yourself, you probably should look at alternate career paths

Read the chapter, go to class, work out the recommended problems, read the chapter again, do the problems again. Until the first test, you need to do everything twice. If you ace the first test, you can start cutting back on your studying. You're way better off studying too much than too little. You'll have a really hard time catching up if you fall behind early.

And this is if you want to get an A. A B isn't too hard to get, depending on how quick you can make sense of this stuff.

I wouldn't say that if work hard and don't get a B, then accounting isn't for you. I got a C in 327, with Perry, and still got into PPA and just signed a contract to work full time. If you enjoy what you are doing and like the challenge, stick with it even if you get a C.

327 is a tough course and there's no way around that. Here are some things that you should consider.

- GO TO CLASS. If you skip it will hurt you. A ton of information is covered each class.

- Read. So far 327 is the only class I've had to dilligently read for but trust me, it helps. There will be test questions that are exclusively from the book.

- Take advantage of the first test. Most people (myself included) got owned by the first exam. For me at least it was because I was lazy and didn't pay much attention to the text. After this test I learned my lesson pretty quick. However since most people did so poorly the curve was literally 20+ points. Use that to your advantage.

I'm guessing you have Knight as your prof since you're taking this in the spring. She is very cool and down to earth and does actually care about her students (I took her last semester). If you don't understand something go talk to her. She's more than willing to help her students out. But bear in mind, her tests ARE hard. Good luck!

my first 2 test grades were a 73 and 55...
The I started doing A LOT of practice problems with the beg. exercises and exercises at the end of each chapter and wound up getting an 85 and an 84 on the last to tests.

So my advice is to practice the problems as much as possible, and yes it does suck but it pays off

No one ever did

It's not necessary.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm heading to the library now to study for the class. We have a quiz over chapters 1 and 2 on Friday.

1st intermediate, which is an accounting weed-out at A&M and every other good accounting school out there.

I got a 5 on the first quiz but it was easy. The class is really intimidating in that I really feel that everyone in there is smarter than me. I hope I can get over it.

Read up on hedging and ask her an educated question on the subject. You'll be her favorite. I promise (assuming you have Knight).

Ask her how SFAS 159 will impact the use of embedded derivative and if there is a current project by the FASB to beat the **** out of the next lawyer who fills a contract with them (typically in impact of default sections).

I promise you ACCT 327 is not that hard. You're in upper level now, you have to actually read your text book. Just treat it like a job, don't go home till 5. Just go to the library and read what you just learned and do the problems. And then after 5pm just quit until the next day. I guarantee you will pull an A or a B if you do that.

P.S. PPA isn't really weeding out anymore. I know people in PPA that really shouldn't be in it. You'll be fine.

P.P.S If you have Shannon you should feel lucky, she's a badass... and a lot easier than Perry (Though you may have understood it better with Perry).

327 has long been the make or break class for acceptance into PPA. Make a B or better in 327 and you're pretty much guaranteed acceptance (assuming you meet the other requirements).

Back when Perry was around she was considered the "gatekeeper," if you will...

I remember taking ACCT 327 the fall semester of my pisshead year and I am here to tell you that I went from being an Accounting major to Business Management.

I busted my A$$ to get a C in this course.

Good Luck!!

I am not sure what your point is. Perry set the distribution at 21% A's, 42% B's, and the rest C's, D's, and F's. That pattern is still followed by the professors today.
Bobby Light

Point is that acceptance into PPA hinges on success in 327.

Sure grade distributions can be followed, but that doesn't necessarily correlate to difficulty. Perry was in a league all her own...

How long do you want to ignore this user?
In Knight's class she would give some of Perry's previous tests to study for the exam (although a lot of the material on the practice test weren't exactly on the real thing). I found that at least the test questions were of comparable difficulty and I found Knight's first test to even be much harder than the exams we had from Perry. So I guess unless Perry just doesn't do a thorough job teaching the material and expects you to teach yourself a lot, I don't see how her class could be that much harder.

good luck with the class. I struggled a lot in it but swung a B. If for whatever reason you don't get into PPA after that class, but still are intent on acct, don't think you have to change your major.

If figured out that you can pretty much double major in acct/finc, and still learn a lot of the things you do in PPA-finance track.

The best thing about PPA is the doors it opens up into acct. A lot of consulting and ibanking seem to be recruiting A&M business and PPA students more as well. If you don't go the PPA route, your not SOL, you just have to work a little bit harder to get your foot in the door.
