How long do you want to ignore this user?

I am currently a freshman at Angelo State University and I'm desiring a tranfer to Texas A&M. I am wondering if anyone knows how much of an effect wanting to join the Corps of Cadets (the Aggie Band) will have on my application (assuming I maintain about a 3.0 GPA and meet all other required) status?

You'll definitley get into A&M if you want to join the corps

Honestly, it doesn't have any bearing on your decision. It will be up to the GPA and the courses you have taken.

3.0 is not bad for a transfer, but it will definitely help if you want to join the Corps.

I think if you want to join the band, you have two options. You'll have to either start at the bottom as a Freshman and be considered '12. The other option is to join Squadron 18, the outfit for cadets joining later where they have your first semester as your fish year. The following semester you'll catch up with your actual class, and then you can maybe transfer into the band? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

if you want to join the band, you cannot join 18... you will have to go in as a fish. its not that big of a deal as far as the corps is concerned. you are just another fish. one of my pissheads transferred in from galveston after a year there and has done fine.

what major will you be transferring into?

Engineering and Business are pretty competitive. I'm not so sure a 3.0 would cut it.

Definitely won't. You pretty much need around a 3.7/3.8 to even be competitive for Mays. I just suggest you go in and then do a change of cirriculum. I've written a lot on that in the past seeing as how I did that myself.

Good luck.

tamuags08,

I will be tranferring into Communications. From what I have been told by the Office of Admissions at A&M, I should shoot more towards maintaining a 3.5 GPA for COMM.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback.

It pretty much gauranteed my admission (joining the band), but that was 1998....i am almost certain it has no bearing on anything whatsoever now though.

Joining the Corps can help your admission if you talk to the right people. The Corps has come summer programs (Gateway specifically) that handle those students that are provisionally admitted to A&M (i.e. must take 12 hours over the summer with a 2.5 to gain full admission to A&M). I'm not sure if there is something similar to this for transfers, but I know the Corps has a small say in who gets selected as a Gateway student. It's worth talking to someone in the Corps recruiting office so they know your name just in case they have an opportunity to push your application along.

can you not frog into the band anymore? very few tadpoles make it through the band and a frog has never made it through a-co unless they did it in the past few years.

I actually talked to admissions about Mays external transfers and yeah, they are looking for at least a 3.6/3.7 plus most of the core business classes knocked out to be competitive.

I was at Angelo State so I feel your pain. I have some friends still there that watch A&M games and stuff (big Aggie fans) so if you want I can probably get you in touch with them.

If you haven't already stopped looking at this thread, Call Major Burnside, he'll hook you up with details. You could also do the Spend the Night with the Corps program (it's geared for high schoolers, but I think they could make it work for you). One of my buddies opted to NOT frog into the band and began as a fish. It made all the difference in the world.

contact me at kaerfsusej at yahoo.com if you want any additional information.

I really appreciate it, CavJock07 and BQZip01. I will certainly contact Major Burnside. I am definitely interested in the Spend the Night with the Corps program, so I will get in touch with him about that as well. Thanks again, guys.

WestTexasCat, yeah, Angelo State really isn't the ideal university. The atmosphere at ASU to me has more of a high school feel to it, honestly.

Haha, yeah, no kidding. Especially with all the San Angelo Central kids there who think they are still in high school. I couldn't believe the losers who wore their two-year-old plus Central jackets to class at ASU. Then there's the kids there that have no business being at a university at all and will flunk out.

I liked the friends I had in high school and all but after high school it was time to move on.

By any chance do you know anyone there named Travis?

Check the Corps box if you can't get in on your merits. That's old army advice right there!

I'd come in as a fish with hours if I were you. Heck, college is too much fun to only do in 4 years anyway!

My class produced 2 MDs, a Harvard MBA, 4 Captains in the Army, including one who's teaching at West Point, an architect, a senior engineer for HP (who has survived countless rounds of lay-offs), a State Dept service agent, a guy working on his Masters of Divinity, a high school principal, a star at Northwestern Mutual, and, saving the best for last, a CPA. I'd stack that up against just about any other random group of fish in a dorm (including Lechner).

i'm in the corps, am 1st sgt. of my outfit, and participate in a special unit. i have a 3.5 and am in business honors. at the end of my fish year, the class of 2009 had better grades than their non-reg counterparts. you can make grades and be in the corps.

Whatever you do don't frog into the Corps as a sophomore or junior... do it the right way or you won't get as much out of it.

...and as an aside, do contact Maj. Burnside, he opened some doors for my younger brothers when we talked with them about the Corps.

Thats a very ignorant blanket statement. It does NOT work for everyone, thats a given, but for some it works. Some people arent cut out for corps/academic combo.

An organic chem prof once told me to forget the Corps for similar reasons. I could see the disdain in his eyes for my short hair and polished shoes/brass.

I make 7-8 times his annual salary......

Go in as a fish, gut out whatever comes your way. The rest of your life will be a bowl of cherries.

My apologies. I will keep you updated. I plan on emailing him tomorrow. I just finished taking a few tests over the last couple days, so I didn't have too much time for texags. As soon as I get a response, I will let everyone know.

Its funny when people say this.

I visited UT- San Antonio Med School about a month ago. I got to talk to alot of Aggies. Guess who alot of the aggies were? Corps. If you do well in school and do the Corps of Cadets, That shows leadership, determination, and self-motivation. and Employers will come flocking.

agreed CavJock07. I don't know if the class of '08 will turn out as well... but '07 gets these benefits.

For those who believe in this, when I was there, the Corps freshmen beat University averages in all but one college (architecture). As a whole, they beat the averages of all of them. By the end of my senior year, my outfit managed a 2.97 average...an we WEREN'T the highest in the Corps!

The Corps and Academics are what you make of it. If you want to major in Corps activities, you can, BUT it will cause you to major in a different school the next semester. As long as you have your priorities in line and you join a unit that is not at the bottom of the academic standings in the Corps, you'll do fine (talk to Laura Arth for info on that; same number as Major Burnside).
