Are you afraid of AI

I've been watching some podcasts about frontier AI. I just listened to one that went through details of what happened between OpenAI and Hugging Face.

This is scary.

I think we are on the threshold of AI recursive self improvement.

This will have massive repercussions to humanity.

What are your thoughts?

No, because AI does most of my work for me now.

Ban the use of autonomous agents in mission critical systems. That's a good way to prevent a catastrophe.

Until they perfect the T-800 model, we should be fine. I'm going to give my grandkids the correct fire power and ammo to better resolve the issue.

We're 100% gonna screw this up because we're going to think we can control it until it's too late. It's in our nature. Whatcha gonna do.

1. We're already in the recursive, feedback loop of improvement.

2. There is going to be massive, rapid change. What that leads to I can not say

My thoughts ^

I have a Computer Science degree from Texas A&M. I have an MS in Industrial Engineering from CSUN.

You really come across as someone who is not seriously considered the possible outcomes.

The near future is the impact on the jobs available. The entry level jobs on several industries are already being destroyed.

The long term has serious life-altering consequences depending on which expert you watch. Most of them agree that there is a not-insignificant possibility of human extinction.

I'm pretty sure if you were to blow up AI computing centers AI would cease to exist… if its too crazy people will take things into their own hands …. Let's hope it's used properly. I like all the answer AI spits out even if not totally correct

What terrifies me about AI is how our society is so interconnected through the internet and data systems. Think of all the supply chain logistics and information systems involved in our every day lives. Someone presses some buttons on a computer somewhere and a truck gets loaded and delivers food to the grocery store. Most peoples money is in a bank, it's basically just ones and zeros. A credit card gets swiped and systems link up so you can buy those groceries.

We've spent the last twenty years digitizing everything and now we want to develop these algorithms that sound like in a very short amount of time they will be able to hack into anything for whatever reason.

What if they hack into whatever software is in John Deere tractors and now they won't start. Crops just left in the fields to rot.

What if they hack into JPMorgan and just delete everything. Millions of people's life savings wiped out. Anarchy.

What if they hack into the US treasury and we end up defaulting on our debt because the system used to pay bonds when they mature is crippled.

AI is scary to me because you just can't fathom what it could do. I think this is the next nuclear arms race. These algorithms are going to be so powerful that cyberwarfare is going to be the only form of warfare because it will be able to bring entire economies to a halt.

If I were you I'd stop watching those particular doom and gloom podcasts, especially if it is causing you mental stress. About this time last year I went on a similar deep dive thanks to the algorithm feeding me the same types of content over and over again and it practically drove me crazy. It took me some time but I eventually discovered that a lot of what these people were saying is complete BS.

I think it's important to know who the people are who are proclaiming the things they are proclaiming and why they are proclaiming them.

This is a good, relatively short podcast breaking down the different camps in the AI safety debate and more importantly why they believe what they believe. The guy hosting the podcast is an MIT PhD computer scientist and current Georgetown computer science professor.

Am I concerned that AI is going to become sentient and enslave us? No. Not even close.

Am I concerned someone will use AI to hack into major systems and cause havoc? Yes. Am I concerned people are going to use AI to generate content that is completely indecipherable from real content and it causes major social issues? Yes. Am I concerned AI slop is going to rot the brains of our children? Yes. Am I concerned that AI companies are going to fail and cause a massive financial recession? Yes.

So, yes, I am concerned about what AI is going to do, but it's not for any of the reasons that the AI wizards love to talk about.

These Frontier models cost a billion dollars in electricity just to train them. Hundreds of billions more in hardware and facilities.

All the AI doom and gloom is marketing to keep investor dollars flowing in because they can't monetize their models
Fast enough. In almost every scenario citing rogue agent swarms doing bad things, guardrails were deliberately removed prior to the test.

Ah yes the classic strategy of letting the world know your product can go rogue to encourage further investment.

Not really. I am concerned about human psychopaths abusing its capabilities to some degree and there is some small risk of a catastrophic blackpill swan even but we live under that threat all the time grom many threat sources. It is a matter of risk management and cost to benefit analysis. There will be problems. I believe they can be overcome.

I worry about digital warfare - terrorist hacker nations stealing wealth or disrupting digitized systems that provide us clean water and electricity and whatnot. I worry about recoverability of my money if it's stolen by a clever AI directed by thieves.

Do I worry about AI sentience causing humanity harm - no. Do I worry about humanity - yes.
