Will supplement with official link and details but he signed the EO today and announced on his visit to NASA (which will produce jokes and memes from how he held the phone away from his ear whilst chatting with the Space Station).

Currently the Space Force "cadets" are at the USAF or don't appeared when we visited in June (side note the new visitor center is awesome, Hotel Polaris is great, cathedral still under wraps).

Another great, long lasting impact Trump will have on securing our future, terrestrially and beyond.

Details Thus Far…

- No location determined

- Would sit under NASA and not DOD.

More at this link for now:

Its a good idea. USSF will be the most important military branch by 2040 if not sooner. Huntsville, Al is gonna be a busy place.

This sounds dumb. Should the Marines get their own academy as well?

Space cadets in training to be Guardians.

I love it!

They have one. It's called "summer school".

So it looks like the Merchant Marine Academy, but for space - not under the DoD but cadets have the option to join the military after graduation as 2LTs.

I assume USAFA will continue sending officers to the Space Force.

And your post sounds short sighted. Its not 1990 anymore bud. The high ground has always been an integral aspect of warfare. And this gets you the high ground so yeah expect the military to invest accordingly.

Depends. Do you think it's important for Marine leadship to go to Anapolis to be trained on the ins and outs of ships and naval surface warfair to be used in reality as a quick reaction force that only uses ships as a logistical source (sometimes) to get to the battlefield for ground warfair? I'm sure playing battleship was really useful when they were leading companies kicking in doors in Fallujah.

It's not like army avaitors should be split off from the army to form some new fangled thing like an airforce since air superiority and trench warfair are identical.

I know it's being reported as such, but I suspect that this isn't intended to be a replacement for USAFA for Guardians. I foresee it being more of a STARCOM advanced training institution in partnership with NASA. Could be wrong though.

I think this is how Starfleet Academy got its start.

Is this for academic or military reasons. If it's for space exploration, is that militarizing space travel? Universities like A&M have space grants and of course great aeronautical programs, so what the purpose since Trump says he going to model it after the Academies.

Aren't they part of the Navy? Their academy is in Annapolis.

Crazy thought… why not move NASA under DoW?

What was once a science / exploratory focus is likely to become more and more about security (military, economic, etc).

It was before my time, but surely this was debated when NASA was carved out.

That was my point. The Space Force has the same relationship within the Department of the Air Force that the Marine Corps has within the Department of the Navy.

Great move by Trump! The left will hate it and mock as will the media. But this is a good thing and would be hailed as genius if from a dem president.

It makes sense that NASA started under the Air Force because all of the federally trained pilots, rocket experts, etc were in the military. Being that it had no practical military application, it makes sense that it be carved out.

Before you move NASA back under the military, you'd need to ask what NASA's focus is. I fell like, in recent years, it's been focused on moon and mars exploration. That still doesn't sound particularly militaristic.

But I could see why the military might train under NASA now for the same reason NASA was under the military before. Because after decades of separation, NASA is the greater expert in space flight.

What a missed opportunity to call it Starfleet Academy.

Not sure how I feel about this but it seems like creating more government just to create more government.

It's like getting a minor in business vs getting a BBA in finance or accounting.

I think we could wait and see the degree requirements before making the determination.

The Portuguese and Spanish sent missionaries AND conquistadors when they went to rape and pillage new worlds. I don't expect to encounter aliens, but watch "For All Mankind" for a fictional but real look at how military is always involved. If it was all going to be friendly, the Chinese would be hitching rides on Artemis and how the Russians have made themselves rich extorting us for Soyuz rides.

DJT sees extra-terrestrial activity as key to our national security, rightly so.

It's an interesting debate. I see where you are coming from and have no real passion for NASA to not be civilian, but I think it's a worthy question.

Last year USAFA created 903 Air Force Lts and 93 SF officers. So maybe the numbers aren't there yet, but might be by the time they find a location and start building a school. Ultimately it is petty pointless unless Congress allocates money.

The service is growing quickly. The new year long USSF Officer Training Course just graduated its sixth cohort after the first graduation a year ago. A little over 400 new officers completed the course in its inaugural year. They're already planning on increasing the new accessions to handle at least twice this many in the coming year.

Not sure where they're gonna find all these folks but there's a lot of growth for the service that's going to require a lot of smart new Lts to help lead the development of novel concepts in an emerging war fighting domain to keep ahead of the chicoms and soviets.

If Trump takes a joy ride on a Falcon 9 doesn't become Space Force One? Asking for an orange friend.
