So the social media publisher, known as DataRepublican took a job with the State Department (real name is Jennica Pounds).

She previously had media credentials (Pentagon Press Corps), which expired in June. She started the D.O.D. job in July. There was no conflict there...though the article seems to paint this as nefarious, because she didnt report the non-conflict to the Pentagon?

She was given information to post online, from Sarah Rogers (Undersecretary of State), as an 'exclusive'. But the info and markings looked suspicious to Pounds, so she posted online that she feared she was being set up to leak something she shouldn't.

Now the story widely being reported is that Pounds has been 'outed as a State Dept employee after botching a scoop.

Maybe she should have handled that internally, but I can understand her posting publicly, as a safeguard...given her extensive public profile online.

Other than that, what is the story here? She started a DOD Job? She had no media/job conflict? She was overly concerned about 'exclusive' info? Seems like some in the media have her in their crosshairs.

You're falling for her narrative. She took the job in July. Since then, she has been acting like nothing happened, when she should have disclosed to her followers that she had taken a job as a "special government employee" with DoW. If she'd done that, there would be no issue, and life goes on. It's unethical in her role as a journalist to claim you're hunting the deep state when you're on the same payroll as the deep state. She only got caught because she got some documents and didn't know what the hell they meant.

Unless you're privvy to her function for the DOD, you have no idea if it's conflicting. So why would she present herself in any way?

People are still allowed to pursue side jobs and passions/hobbies outside of work, if it doesnt conflict with their employers' terms.

And just because she took a job with the DOW doesn't mean there is an inherent conflict of interest. It WOULD have been a conflict if she had disclosed information that was obtained as part of her job...which is exactly what she did NOT do.

Besides, the DOW would have been fully aware of her internet presence and if THEY decided it was a conflict of interest they wouldn't have let her have the job.

Are you claiming to be someone that is an independent journalist? No? Then there's not a conflict.
The conflict isn't with DoW; it's in her role as a journalist. She's got nearly a million followers on X and what is almost certainly a monetized account. She would fit any definition of being a journalist. And part of doing that job is disclosing any possible conflicts of interest.

She's a special government employee, but hasn't said exactly what she's doing. And that's the problem. When she gave up her press pass at the end of June and took a job at DoW, she was no longer operating as an independent journalist, but she continued to present herself in that manner.
Her whole MO was that she went after the feds for corruption and malfeasance. And now she is one, and didn't tell anyone.

She didnt 'claim' anything since taking the job. In fact, she previously worked for DOGE, so she's never been completely independent. Not sure why you require this disclosure from her now.

And again, since you can read, please tell me what specific conflict of interest her new job has with her online presence.
