My wife's nephew in Canada got an admit to one of the universities there, so I was curious about the rankings. So I looked in USNews for World Computer Science Rankings and I was shocked at what I saw. The top schools are all China/Singapore/HK.

Stanford University is the top US school at No 8. MIT is below that. Why do Chinese students come to the US to study Computer Science when their schools are better? My guess is the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) sends them here as spies to steal our research and tech and they build on top of that. PhD levels at US schools are littered with Chinese students and most of them go back. Their investment is just the cost of the student and tuition.

Our lack of vision and foresight and focusing on short term outcomes is causing our loss of edge in yet another field.

Possibly some validity and a concern but also AI is very very good at replacing this particular profession excepting the extreme edge of innovation. That is where the concern will be: innovation requires experimenting and R&D. AI is stronger on the application of the technology.

US News and World rankings are illegitimate and were debunked as frauds many years ago. Having said that, I don't doubt some of the Chinese schools are better than ours simply because they are actually focused on Computer Science as opposed to our schools which shifted to b.s. DEI and social justice programming.

We had the story on here just a couple of days ago where the #12 school in this list (Berkeley) has a large portion of their freshman who can't do remedial math.

Great. They can now keep their Chinese students at home and take ALL of the Indian Students to China.

I don't believe that for a second. Also, why are we wasting spots at our top universities on Chicoms?! Stop training our enemies.

Our top universities (mostly private) use international students to pay the bills so they can give unqualified hoodrats free tuition. They also gouge the **** out of affluent American students for the same reason. Imagine if they filled all their spots with fully qualified Americans and charged everybody a reasonable tuition.

Yeah, they are so good they've literally never invented a single thing (ok, perhaps a single thing but nothing comes to mind off hand) related to tech.

No innovation.

No major tech breakthroughs.

Nothing!

They copy us.

So that was true for the longest time, but it isn't anymore. I can't speak specifically to all high tech, but in biopharma they have kind of lapped the west. Every big pharma is over there buying stuff up because that's where a lot of the innovation is happening. I'm pretty sure it's true for a lot of other tech as well.

They may have greatly accelerated their development timelines by stealing all the IP they could get a hold of, but now they are doing real novel work and if we don't wake up in 10 years we will wonder why China looks like the sci-fi future and we look like the past.

Well, I notice a trend for folks to say not to worry, AI will negate everything. I see this reasoning with H1Bs taking our jobs also, saying AI will kill them off anyway.

AI needs research and if China is ahead of us, they will control where tech moves in the coming decades. AI won't negate this, and if it does, it would be their AI, not ours.

What is not bs? Gender Studies? Feminist Theory?

Just because we are losing, let's not take our ball and go home.

China has a billion people. Of course there are going to be many genius bright people and some top Universities. They also have a system that is very competitive in schooling with top students moving forward and laggards pushed out, sometimes completely.

The main issue is the pseudo mafia state government, corruption, and lack of incentive for those great minds in a properly functioning private sector.

Just getting the too 10% of their students into a University is a major challenge. The population numbers are staggering. I'm not making excuses for flooding our universities with Chinese students but if one were to logically think of the numbers of Chinese and Indian students capable of University level study, it isn't hard to understand why Universities get flooded with them if our system allows it.
Buck Turgidson
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Almost everything about China is fake. They have wildly overblown population numbers, no reliable stats on demographic or economic data, massive unemployment, empty factories, and an improving but still terrible standard of living. All their technology is stolen from the US or Europe (or South Korea or Taiwan or Japan). They make mostly crappy products and have a young population from whom the brightest seem determined to come to the US. They make none of the more advanced chips. Their military is a paper tiger that couldn't win an offensive war against anybody but weaker immediate neighbors and even then would suffer massive casualties. The whole country is like a movie set where there is nothing behind the facades,

Why, then, should I believe they have FIVE universities better than MIT or Stanford at Computer Science?

Nobody really believes that anymore. Maybe 700-900 million at most. Quite possibly less than that. Its easy for China to pretend when they've never published reliable census data. You sure as hell don't get there by starting out with about 980 million in 1980 (we guess) and then brutally enforce a one child policy for 36 years, followed by a fertility rate that stubbornly remains around 1 child per couple ever since. That's 46 years of below replacement rate births and several pandemics like SARS, Bird Flu and Covid culling the elderly population.

Okay 900 million. My point is completely negated (rolls eyes)...
Edited to add I have worked and travelled China extensively. There is actually a metric sh*t ton of people if we want to get to actual numbers.

The real issue is our top universities are more interested in social and gender issues along with DEI than cutting edge research. Most of them are fighting some leftist fight instead of advancing science. Chinese don't have time for DEI and related bs. Their Universities focus on things that need to be worked on. And when they cannot do it, they steal from us and build on it. So their products are cheaper while we bear the research cost.
