Chinese company Geely (owner of Volvo) has said they might begin production within 24 months.

In the third article I have linked to, there is an explanation about why Chinese companies may be reluctant to enter the market under the current (ever-changing) circumstances. Just like American companies, it's hard to predict the future when you have someone who is unstable in their policies in charge of the country.

How is Trump picking a winner or loser in this situation?

From your OP, he's doing nothing more than giving a Chinese company the option to build cars in the US - like almost all Japanese car companies already do. The purpose is to use US workers to build the cars in exchange for avoiding import tariffs on the final product.

The Chinese cars and especially trucks that would be in demand ( the cheap ones ) probably won't pass NHTSA
The nice ones they can't make here cheaply enough to be worth building the plant

Tesla and Obama Motors make a lot of cars in China, fyi. A trade relationship where both sides have significant economic interests in local production with the other makes more sense than vice versa, where only one side does.

Volvo (Geely), Lincoln, and Buick already were selling Chinese-made cars here before Trump '47, fwiw.

I don't think a lot of Democrats understand the modern auto business at all (or any other for that matter).

Mom passed in '18 and my daughter inherits a 5 year old S60 with 12k miles. For $85 to change the title - score! Chinese piece of crap.

When we sold that poorly built Volvo in name only it was a beautiful day. Our mechanic who never shows emotion, smiled and said good when I told him we sold it. He hated that car more than we did. What the Swedes built into
quality, safety and performance the Chinese gutted and ruined.

But their aren't Fabs over here because they woild be less competitive when using American Labor

and yes we are already selling vehicles that have significant Chinese components

I've read that because some of their politburo leaders got Buicks in the 50's, they as a population still highly value the brand, and that is part of the reason Pontiac was axed instead of Buick 20-ish years ago. Not sure if true, but I sort of chuckled at that.

This board and the right in general has become pretty anti-China in recent years. This thread is an attempt to create a gotcha from a pro-Trump crowd with regard to China policy. It failed but that was predictable. The OP doesn't understand why we're anti-China so he couldn't predict our reaction to this news.

Agreed, probably not the dunk on Trump some on Reddit must think it is. (I'd have concerns with buying a Canadian-made Honda Civic or Lexus these days too, fwiw, though not due to quality concerns).
