Johnson says no vote on an extension of the Democrat subsidies. Johnson offered to make spending cuts to offset the cost of the subsidies but some of the Rs said no.

Prepare your chocolate starfish!

Unfortunately, the takers of society will still get their massive subsidies. This move screws the middle class.

And now the Dems use the predictable "Republicans are taking away your healthcare" line.

I think this was a stupid decision. The one time that the Republicans hold firm on spending increases is the one time I disagree with it. These guys are political lightweights in every way.

Here are some details on the separate Republican Healthcare Bill mentioned in OP article that is up for vote on Wednesday: https://www.wsj.com/opinion/house-republicans-healthcare-bill-obamacare-mike-johnson-ad45ec77?st=xVXZha&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

For context, the subsides in question are about $130B per year.

Here is the problem.... most of the people using the premium tax credits, which are the ones in question, are in red states. These are the ones that the middle class above the poverty line are using that are expiring.

What we don't know is the breakdown beyond the state level - are these Dems in blue cities or rural reds? Don't know.

The R's are playing checkers instead of chess.

There was an opportunity here to extend the enhanced subsidies for 3 to 5 years in exchange for structural reforms (HSAs, etc.) that would gradually shift the model from government-controlled healthcare to more of a free market solution, bending down the cost curve over time.

If they had put that on the table and the Dems rejected it, then the Dems would own the near term pain of no subsidies.

But once again, R's can't look past the end of their nose and play small ball instead of changing the game itself.

So, they are trying to bend the curve with the separate plan being voted on Wednesday but agree they should have just extended the subsidies for at least a year and then pivot to their other plan. We are talking about ~$130B. Use the $200B in tariff revenue YTD to pay for it.

They would have removed the immediate hot potato and taken it off the board. But now they put the mid-terms in total doubt and will lose any momentum they could have had with their healthcare plan.

They are morons.

Any Rep in a contested state just nailed their own coffin.

One way or other, the subsidies are coming back. The GOP decided they'd rather let the Dems take back control of Congress next November and pass them, instead of passing it themselves and keeping their jobs.

Or use the tariff revenue to pay for something else, or apply it to the debt, or refund to those paying income tax. The government should not be involved in health insurance nor renter's insurance, homeowner's insurance, auto insurance, life insurance, and so on. Those all exist without government involvement such as subsidies. It is very simple: if you want insurance, buy it. They accept checks, credit cards, some might take cash.

It sounds like the R's in contested states wanted the vote. The R's that aren't are the ones that killed it because they couldn't agree on offsetting cost cuts to make if they extended subsidies.

They are a very stupid political party and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as a regular course of action.

Agreed, but this one was an easy an obvious political game to play from a cost/benefit standpoint.

A one-time $200B won't do dick to the national debt when you are $2T underwater on an annual basis.

That money is better spent here to get a political win that then extends your chances of actually getting some real change to healthcare.

For those that just want to watch it burn down, then I guess this is a win.

The GOP stands on their "morals and ethics" soap box.

That's good and well, except they know the Dems are going to knock them off. Democrats don't adhere to ethics, they ONLY care about winning. And they'll prove it in November, when they make Trump a lame duck.

This is likely payback for the Dems shutting down the government for so long.

I like it. It sends the message to Schumer loud and clear: Don't do that again.

On top of the subsidies coming back when the Dems take back Congress next November, they'll push the envelope even further, is my guess - illegals getting to the front of the line or something brazenly corrupt like that.

So, for all of you keeping score and cheering when the ball is at the 2 yard line but gets fumbled, don't complain when the Dems pick the ball up and run it back 98 yards and keep piling on.

Burn it down.

It's time to end PE owning hospitals and doctor practices to extract value from billing the government and private insurance. And private insurance needs to reform, which it won't until it's a luxury good and totally unaffordable. We need to end billing people who pay to offset those who don't. It's time for people to see the cost of their medical care directly.

And the same people who want to end SS want this ended too. The system is too complex and burdensome for the young.

The newest data shows that the GOP is looking at a best-case scenario of +5. I think Indiana declined to take up the mantle, and other states aren't testing the waters now.

Any outlet you choose shows a pending bloodbath for the House next year.

Maybe. It doesn't really matter though. The Republicans keep the Senate regardless. All a Dem House would do is impeach Trump again once or twice, only to see it quickly die in the Senate. Gridlock.

Gridlock may be the likeliest of the scenarios.

But, then it starts putting 2028 in jeopardy. And, nothing gets fixed with health insurance, immigration, etc...

From what others mentioned on another thread, this takes things back to how they were before the subsidies thanks to covid.

If that's the case, Republicans didn't take away Obamacare, they just (rightfully) took Obamacare back to the way things were had covid never happened.

I don't see what's wrong with that. Granted, I don't pay for my health insurance, so my opinion on he matter doesn't hold as much weight as those who do, but I digress.

This thread feels very… botty… to me. Very certain declarations of doom on a topic that's multiple layers separated from general population visibility…

I'm an F16 junkie and would need to deep dive terms and implications, but several posters go back and forth every 3 minutes about the apparent midterm implications…
