"... fraudulent e-commerce and investment schemes, illegal online casinos, the sale of banned medical products..."

Meta figured they might have to pay up to $1 Billion total in fines for allowing scam ads on Facebook.

BUT, they projected to make $7 Billion per year running the scams, and Zuck wanted cash for AI.

So Meta not only encouraged the ads, they also got rid of the team whose job it was to detect and prevent scams. "High value" accounts were allowed to continue after more than 500 strikes.

Social media prints money while destroying lives. Please keep your kids off of this toxic waste.

Meta includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads.

Original story was on Reuters (heavily paywalled).

Best summary I could find was:

If a penalty exists, and a company factors in the penalty as nothing more than a cost of doing business it seems like the penalty needs to be increased.

At minimum the NOI related to the violation should be confiscated, with additional fines & penalties added to make it hurt.

They should be fined 3x for every penny of revenue they made on scam ads. Make an example of them and it'll stop for everyone

Same guy who helped the Dems by suppressing dissent over Covid and Hunter's laptop. Same guy who helped spread the word on pro-trans and BLM...that's just off the top of my head. he's a criminal reprobate

Also the same guy who showed up to Washington a few months ago and slobbered all over Trump. All Trump cares about is who sucks up to him the most. Meta will be allowed to do whatever they want.

They are everywhere. Suicide shirts made overseas that don't give money, the testosterone guy who got sued was all over facebook along with other scam artists. I could see some people falling for that.

Ford made a business calculation that paying for deaths from the Pinto's gas tank would be cheaper than fixing the problem. They ended up being wrong.

Yup - Now apply that logic / law to product manufacturers such as the auto industry. A business should never profit from injuring a customer.

I have a feeling Musk is doing the same with his self-driving technology while he perfects it. IOW, passengers and pedestrian death payouts are a small price to pay if there's a Trill to be made in the long run.

Don't do the crime if you cannot do the time... But, crime pays when the you CAN afford to do the time.

Another scumbag CEO. Why am I not surprised?

We have enabled this psychopathic behavior for decades and called it "capitalism" and "free markets", so now these clowns think they can do whatever they want.

The other one is Musk. He is a dangerous one, who wants world domination for himself. A more powerful Soros. It is good that Trump booted him.

If you or I do this, we go to jail. But when a corporation does it, they pay a fine.

See the problem here?

I definitely noticed this. One example- cheap AI fake dialogue ad over real Shark Tank episode videos (selling a different product than what was in the Shark Tank episode). I couldn't believe why Facebook would allow such a phony/scam ad..

. #1 The "celebrity" endorsement from the video was phony and #2 It's almost impossible to believe that Disney is granting rights to the Shark Tank video for a fake ad. How could Facebook/Instagram not catch either concern?

Now it makes sense.

If they were criminal in nature, I.e. fraud, and Tia was known, they should have been blocked and disallowed. If they were just risky or overhyped garbage for dupes and fools but not outright fraud, well, caveat emptor. It is your personal responsibility to not be a foolish or gullible dumb ass. My only exception is for the expertly who may not be quite sound of mind anymore.
