Rather than clutter up the condolences thread, I thought maybe it would be beneficial to have a place for those to give their takes on the history, the legacy of Dick Cheney.

From my perspective, his legacy is going to be a tricky one for all sides to land on was he a good guy or bad guy for the Country. He has been a major player in politics for 50 years going back to being the youngest POTUS Chief of Staff for GERALD FORD.

Credit to johnnyblaze36 for his post with Alex Jones take on the passing of Cheney. Alex is always chock full of hyperbole but he does sum up some of the major issues for Cheney's legacy,

My first gut reaction is someone who was comfortable being a politician first and American second.

If memory serves me all the make ready contracts he won at Halliburton were under Clinton. Then under Bush in the gulf they did an embarrassing job of spending the money. Electrocuted service men in showers embarrassing.

Despite DECADES of smearing him, ABC's George Stephanopoulos gushes over Dick Cheney in death because he too hated Donald Trump:

Stephanopoulos: "But he really set an example in the last couple of years. He said the Constitution and the rule of law is more important than any particular policies that he supported for years."

Jonathan Karl: "And, look, it was a massive twist for a guy who had been one of the most partisan, deeply partisan Republicans of my lifetime. But he saw it as entirely consistent. His life was dedicated to protecting America from existential threats. And at the end, he saw Donald Trump and his movement as a threat to American democracy."

Robin Roberts: "It was country over party."

Karl: "Absolutely."

He seemed to be about his personal "legacy" and his bank account.

Though he was supposedly an attentive father who drove his daughter and her horse to competitions.

Here is an interesting article about how he used Liz to stay in play the last 15 years.

https://nymag.com/news/politics/64601/
Quote:

Her father was pleased and proud. It had been a long and fruitful year for the Cheneys, whose ubiquity on the national scene had surprised members of both parties. By the end of the Bush administration, Dick Cheney had become one of the least popular politicians in America (approval rating: 13 percent), and it was expected that once out of office he would, as he put it, "go fishing" and wait for history to prove him right or wrong. But it quickly became clear that Dick couldn't sit on his handsand neither could Liz. She has spent nearly every day since her father's departure from the White House attempting to extricate him from the jaws of infamy by turning current events into a referendum on his policies. Casting herself as his defense lawyer, she has appeared on television 40-odd times in the last year. And she's conducting the research for a Dick Cheney memoir, a book she persuaded her father to write.

-----snip-----

During the Bush years, Liz Cheney became her father's close adviser, fighting proxy battles for him inside the State Department. By the time Barack Obama was elected, her views on U.S. foreign policy had become even more hawkish than her father'samplified, say associates, by bitterness over Dick Cheney's treatment in the press and by fellow Republicans, including former Bush officials.

100's thousands of people died, our country spent trillions of dollars, so that dip**** could go play state craft in the middle east and enrich himself.

I can't stand that piece of ***** FTR, i was a massive Bush supporter and defended the Iraq war for a long time, but once I opened my eyes I couldn't unsee what I had seen.

There are plenty of things to criticize Cheney on, but why use Alex Jones?
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

My opinion of Dick Cheney is mixed so no need to go through the good and the bad after his death, but my opinion of Stephanopoulos is not. Stephanopoulos can go play in f***ing traffic.

I only used it to start the discussion so as to not clutter the condolences thread. Plus his rant summarizes some of the most popular criticisms of Cheney, whether you agree with his entire take or not.

Just a reference point.

Didn't he write "Its Raining Men"? Maybe "Its Raining Dicks" was what he really had in mind?

I remember discussing GWBs legacy with a friend after the 2008 election. As 2008 came to a close, we had a stale war in Iraq, had not caught up with bin Laden, and had a financial crisis. GWBs was closing his admin on several bad notes. He and I both thought GWBs legacy would be a guy that made a lot of tough decisions that would ultimately be viewed positively by history.

In hindsight, I see the GWB administration as one with lots of potential that was pissed away with a mix of flawed decisions and missed opportunities. Not to mention the Patriot Act that Obama abused with impunity. I place a lot of this at the feet of Cheney who did a lot of dirty work.

James McMurtry (liberal songwriter and Bush hater) wrote a song called Cheney's Toy. At the time I just wrote it off as more of his cynicism, but it has shown to more accurate than I expected.

I am sure there are some positives to the story, but I won't miss Dick Cheney

Good lord. It's incredible the lengths that Democrats will go to forgive someone as long as they are anti-Trump. Has nothing at all to do with "country over party".

If they actually cared about country over party, they would not have LIED and gaslit the entire country about Biden's mental health which is the biggest media coverup since their last media coverup of Hunter's Laptop which superseded their coverup of fake Russia Collusion before that. They covered for the Biden Crime Family and pushed a coup against a sitting POTUS.

F* all of them to hell.

The only justice is to know that W has to live with his guilt. I was completely bamboozled by W and the push to war in Iraq. I'll never forgive myself for falling for those lies and the deaths and destruction they led to.
I will no longer discuss politics with you. I reject your premises and world view. I am finished trying to compromise with you.

Cheney was a POS who hopefully rotting in hell. Dude even shot at a lawyer and couldn't get his approval numbers up. I genuinely feel sorry for the soil that has to touch his dead body for eternity.

This is all you need to know to pass judgement on this man.

He dodged the draft with 5 deferments then rose to a position where his advice sent so many patriots to their deaths in wars he wouldn't have been willing to fight.

Exactly. If Cheney put country over party, why did he vote for Kamala and this far left Marxist version of the Democrat party who flooded the country with illegals and terrorists?

You mean the same daughter that became a traitor to our country and should be charged with her bull**** from the J6 committee.

I never liked him even when he was in office.

That's all I'll say about him but very typical of the hypocritical leftist media who hated people who only support them now because of their hatred of Trump.

They did it with Bush, McCain and even Liz.

Absolutely pathetic

Truth. I don't which daughter was the horse and which one is into clams and kittens.

I do believe that Cheney was convinced that he was on the right side of history. But that's his arrogance and not a proper reflection.

As long as his personal concepts of what was right for America was indeed right for America, he should be given some credit. But I am not sure he ever admitted where he got **** absolutely wrong.

Well. That was something else. Would like to know if what he said starting at the 32 second mark is true. Project for American in 2000 calling for /predicting a 3K terror attack?? Hmm. What do recall is full spectrum dominance as a concept in 2000, kind of a negative outlook considering the upbeat that still existed for the century outlook at that time. But a govt project that mentioned 9/11 before?

I covered many leaders in Iraq. He was the only one that refused to let us land once he was safely on base. We would QRF for everyone, but he made us circle his location while he met whoever. Always bothered me since it greatly risked our team getting hit. I wouldn't call him brave.

Says a lot about someone. And it's not like he would be unaware of the increased risk to your team. Biden wouldn't know, but the former SecDef and defense contractor cum VP would know. Complete arrogance.
