Right before Elon announced that he would make a wikipedia replacement with grok, I was chatting with Grok and it tried to use Politico and Al Jazeera as sources.

I just looked up the state of Texas and it returned nothing. obviously it still has a ways to go.

No where close to being dead.

It will take years before Elon's new thing has any chance to supplant it.

Pretty standard, AI scours media and social media for data to compile. There's still a lot of work left to do until we get any degree of unbiased media as a whole.

Wikipedia is a long way from dead.

I think Grokipedia’s strength lies in surfacing hard-to-find information, which makes it especially valuable for NGOs. Its weakness, though, will be in countering widely distributed narratives. But that's a weakness for all AI in general.

It's not standard when Elon says his reason for creating this is to combat the woke nonsense in Wikipedia

Like everything AI. Terrible generic layout that is difficult to read or skim. Just blocks of words that do not interlink or make it easy for a human to search through. No collapsing off target sections or standardized order of information.

For as terrible as Wikipedia editing is the beauty is that the article format is similar to how a human actually looks for information and how "rabbit holes" and "tunnels" to other topics are in our curious nature.

Wish them the best, but it will not get there unless the AI actually is trained in how a human would organize things.

That is all pretty trivial to implement honestly. It already returns it in article format. Would be nothing to list the headers off to the side as navigation and normalize them to some extent.

This is version 0.1 and Elon admits it is being rushed. Quality of life improvements for it will probably come really quick.

I'm no fan of Wikipedia's politics, but Grokepedia's got a ways to go. Good start though. Hopefully will be politically neutral.

First blush looks like they found neutrality on some challenging topics. It'll be interesting to see how corrections are handled over time.

Currently long winded and clunky, but wiki is untrustworthy on any topics the left cares about, so its not hard to beat in those domains…

Maga will rush to give Grok all their support, and once/if Elon shakes the maga bias from his name, he'll likely start getting others (non maga) to really take a look at choosing Grok over Wikipedia. Until then, though, i think Wikipedia will be continuing as usual.

Will be interesting to track average users daily of both.

ChatGPT in its infancy has about the same aud daily as wiki.

Wikipedia is still the standard. Groko-whatever is good but it will have trouble catching on. First mover advantage. That (and network effects) is why Google+ and other social media failed.

I looked up and compared the entries on each for "chicken fried steak". It seems like they got a head start by copying wikipedia.
