Why is NASA not releasing imaging of 3i ATLAS?

There have been claims the government shutdown is preventing this.

Yes - this is political indeed.

Do you mean this photo from the Web telescope? Or is there a better telescope out there?

NASA hasn't been releasing any photos (James Webb, Hubble, etc.) thanks to the Democrats shutting down the government.

They are not hiding photos of the space rock.

This is really bad if true.

We gotta find new drillers.

This is a comet that many people think might be a man made or alien object. It's tail is facing the wrong way and it's off gases are a composition consistent with commercially fabricated nickel.

So - it's catnip for UFO theorists.

now just hire some spares for the other parts and let's drill that rock

It's currently on the other side of the sun from us, so we have no vision of it. The issue is, the closest it was to us was after the shutdown started. The best possible point to get good imaging passed by and we saw nothing. But everybody knows NASA didn't stop tracking it or trying to analyze it.

The democrats want 3i ATLAS to hit the earth... As long as it votes democratic ; )

Facing the wrong way because of its relative position? That's normal.

It's just a comet... an interstellar comet, which is cool, but it's just a comet.

Hopefully our orbiters around Mars can get some good data from it.

By the time you get that data it'll be seven bloody hours old! We'll be sitting around like an idle schoolboy!

I have $200 telescope I got at Costco a few years ago. That's the extend of my amateur astronomy skills.

The strangest thing about this object is that it has had a tail going towards the sun instead of trailing away from it with the solar wind. In theory, this should only happen if there is venting at the front of the object that is faster than it's motion OR if the object was slowing down, which it is not doing.

All that tells us is there is a lot we still do not know about space and physics.

From the internet. Someone else can verify:

Quote:

If a comet is moving away from the Sun, its tail will trail behind it (as you might expect).

But if a comet is moving toward the Sun, the tail actually points ahead of it, away from the Sun which can look "backward" compared to the comet's path.

It was! I just don't know if it's accurate which is why I said someone else can verify.

Should be the reverse. The tail always points away from the sun regardless of the comet's path. It only "points ahead" of the comet when the comet is moving directly away from the sun, not towards it.

Comet tails always point away from the sun. There is however something called an "anti-tail" which is basically a situation where heavier debris left behind by the comet can look like a tail towards the sun based on earth's perspective.

there are some strange anomalies with 3i atlas but it may be due to the fact that it is only the third interstellar comet we have ever witnessed. so these anomalies may be due to lack of experience with these interstellar travelers. but i don't think it is fair to dismiss the irregularities either. it is clearly different than what we have witnessed with the 2 other interstellar comets we are familiar with.

I think this is what the AI was going for because I didn't share the entire output. It actually said the tail always points away from the sun but then poorly explained that based on the viewers perspective, it could look like it's going towards the sun.

The cameras and sensors are not all the same on each platform. Webb doesn't have a "camera", for example. The images are produced from multiple sensors' output; it has to be analyzed and interpreted to make a picture that makes sense to human eyes. That requires analyst and computer time. And the government is shut down right now. In other words, the images are not sitting in someone's iPhoto library just waiting for an intern to click the "Share" button.

NM Physics is hard. FYI what is commercially fabricated nickel? The reduced form of Ni is the most common form (naturally occurring) outside of an oxidizing atmosphere.
