BRUSSELS The Dutch government has granted itself the power to intervene in company decisions at Dutch-based Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia.

The highly unusual step, announced late Sunday, grants the country the power to "halt and reverse" company decisions meaning Nexperia cannot transfer assets or hire executives without Dutch government approval, according to national media.

The move is a significant escalation in relations between the Netherlands and China and could inflame wider trade tensions between Beijing and the European Union, with Europe caught in the middle of a tit-for-tat chips war between the U.S. and China.

Nexperia, the European semiconductor unit of China's Wingtech Technology Co. is a key supplier to the automotive and consumer electronics industries. The Sept. 30 court order invoked the Goods Availability Act for the first time, a piece of legislation enacted more than 70 years ago to ensure access to critical products in emergencies.
Quote:

"The decision aims to prevent a situation in which the goods produced by Nexperia would become unavailable in an emergency," the government said in a statement late on Sunday, against a backdrop of escalating trade tensions between China and the US and its allies.

The move escalates frictions between western countries and China over access to high-end technology such as advanced semiconductors and critical raw materials.
The Netherlands should "truly adhere to market principles and refrain from politicising economic and trade issues", said spokesperson Lin Jian.

Did the Dutch do this because it was their idea or was Trump or the State Departement/CIA/NSA working behind the scenes?

I would love to see a few more countries jump into this fight in the same week. It would really send a strong message that its just not the US that sees China as at best a bad trade partner.

we have got to start treating ccp and its companies like we did the soviets in the cold war.
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

More like fighting communism with national socialism. But yes, not going to end well.

FYI:

ASML in Veldhoven, Netherlands IS the heart and foundation of all semiconductor manufacturing in the world.
Yes - TSMC in Taiwan is the most important chip manufacture...but without ASML, TSMC can do NOTHING.

ASML's lithography tools are required for the manufacture of virtually ALL computer, phone and electronics.

A western business would protect its IP in competition and would have legal recognition of such protections and rights.

When China, vis a state backed Chinese corporation, buys a technology company, it loots every bit of technology for state use and distribution within China, and is not so concerned with the long term competitive ramifications in market economics. China wants the technology and they'll buy the company if they must to get it. It's a bit different when the state is buying it then shares it as needed with all of its state owned or national industries.

All's fair in love and war. Would you rather the world be held hostage by the Chinese or the Dutch?

Admittedly, it's a tough decision considering we are talking about two of the world's worst cultures.

Truth. Litho technology is what drives Moore's Law. The ability to reliably print smaller and smaller critical dimensions is all a function of lithography.

Especially if it's China and its cohort, the American left.

Major chokepoint of chip data and process knowledge from Europe to China. Combine that with the Dutch installing a non-Chinese board member as part of this and it's easy to see one big reason they'd do this.

It's about time a country showed courage dealing with the CCP. They are a snake, not a dragon. They are our enemy and we should be treating them like one

This is why China has gotten extremely competitive, and innovative so fast. This is really hard to compete against. IP (most of it stolen) being shared across a much larger audience, means there is a much greater chance of success.
