I met a young guy today that grew up in the same small town as I did. He's in his 20's and 15 years younger than I am. He flat out told me that he didn't know what communism was. I asked him if they read Animal Farm or 1984, like we did in school, and he said no. He claimed to be a conservative, but it was obvious that he didn't know what that even meant. When I was in school, we were all taught the evils of communism.
Are they not teaching what communism is in school anymore?

They're teaching communism in schools all across America, particularly in colleges. Just not in the same way you mean.

Yep, it isn't taught in HS. And guess what: there are going to be dozens of comments coming up claiming to be AP History teachers that will defend the curriculum to the death.

Unfortunately, to the "educated historian", 20th century is too recent to formulate an opinion and way to recent to be teaching to kids.

I told that guy exactly that, and he was blown away. He had no clue. They obviously don't teach history worth a damn in school anymore. The guy was blown away when I told him about WW1, the Russian civil war, the Bolshevicks, Stalin, etc.

I have 3 kids. All of them have learned about communism in their History, Government, and Economics classes. Two of my kids attended/currently attending our local public high school. The other one attended a private school in Dallas.
Depends on the state, district, school, and teacher. My younger brother is a highschool history teacher and he's more conservative than I am in some respects. His students learn all about the isms

There was a poll out last year that said that 40-something percent of 18-25 year old would rather live in a socialist society than a capitalist one. A lot of their "education" comes from TikTok videos and late night comedians.

Most people don't know know much about any subject that isn't directly related to their day to day lives. I know an A&M graduate who once asked me who the colonists fought in the American Revolution.

They are teaching Marxist principles as the norm and traditional American values as a negative. They don't call it communism and they present it in a soft insidious way. They have been doing it for over 40 yrs

I teach economics and government now and taught 8th grade US history. My students know that when I say "And what do we know never work?" they say communism.
My anti-communists bias is about the only bias my students can identify in my teaching.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.
