A Vermont substitute teacher has been cited after allegedly being so drugged out during class that she thought one of her students was her dog.

47-year-old Melissa Martin is accused of bringing cocaine onto Barre Town Middle & Elementary School campus.

Maybe it's time for a national substitute teacher registry.......or at least background checks like gun owners get.

Honestly - it would take a really big bag of cocaine to make me want to be a substitute teacher.

Thread is worthless without pictures.
How am I supposed to judge her guilt or innocence?

FIFY.

Taught for 10 years. Subbed during college.

Never again. Letting my teaching license lapse.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Elections are when people find out what politicians stand for, and politicians find out what people will fall for.

Can cocaine make you have psychotic hallucinations like this? I have never heard of that. We sure she wasn't on acid or some other type of psychedelic?

The report also said she was nodding off. That don't make no sense.
A coked up teacher would be entertaining. Lame kids.

Large quantities, not sleeping because you're up doing blow all night, can definitely cause psychosis.

Agreed, the teacher mustve been on other substances, not just coke.

It's not like people are beating down the doors to serve as substitute teachers.

Substitute teaching is a great way to earn some money if you are in-between jobs.

In her defense. The kid was probably identifying as a dog.

in our district it pays less than $100/day. It's insulting.

Here in East Tennessee, I think it pays about $75 a day. You can make more working fast food, and not have to mess with the horrible students.

CSISD requires a background check just to chaperone a field trip or volunteer in some other way. Substitute teachers definitely get checked, at least in College Station.

Was the teacher drugged out, dragged out or both?

I think that applies to all schools in Texas, plus in our local district you have to go through orientation and training classes before the school year starts to get on the substitute list. The comment about pay is right.

Maybe it was pot. I've read upon these pages that pot can destroy relationships and cost you your job.

Cocaine? Pfffffft. Child's play. Pot is the evil.

Is this really such a big deal? C'mon F16 - have you people never heard of a student being called a "teacher's pet"?
