I may be the only house in my HOA w/o a Ring camera. Here is some "Great" news!!!

1) The new ring cameras (4K) promise near perfect resolution at high zooms, even in near dark.
2) Also new to ring: "search party", which allows your camera to check for lost pets etc. and share video with the community. Enabled on by default. You can be a "hero" sharing your camera with the neighborhood.
3) Finally, ring introduces facial recognition. Recognize who is at your door or in your yard and be automatically notified.

Please excuse my tin foil hat, but I am the only one wondering who end up abusing this technology worse, corporations or government?

BTW, Ring says "there are no current plans to integrate facial recognition with search party."

And, I'll call BS on that right now.

BTW, if you live in Texas, it is one of 2 states where facial recognition will not be implemented by Amazon due to a new state law. Props to our state legislature for that, at least until they get bought out.

In a world infested with the pervasive scourge of social media, not to mention facial recognition at government locations like airports, I doubt this adds an ounce of additional concern.

I believe the first two have been part of Ring for a while.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

Lot of difference, imo, between government and industry setting up "checkpoints" and "most" houses/apartments joining in.

I have no idea of what it is in your neighborhoods, but literally, I am the only one that I know of in my small HOA (~50 homes) w/o a doorbell camera.

This frog says the water is getting hotter and some point we be soup.

You know what would be a useful feature? Use AI to automatically generate post on Nextdoor every time a dog walks by.

Plenty of other options exist (with no subscription) other than Ring, not sure why people dont do research.

I had a neighbor once who posted photos of a woman in her 40s looking through his driveway gate. It was one of those "does anyone know who this person is?" kind of posts, where he assumed she was a brazen criminal casing his joint at 10 a.m. in the morning.

The photos were clear enough that the woman recognized herself. She answered his post saying "I'm an avid gardener and I saw your beautiful backyard landscaping while I was walking by. I was just trying to get a closer look."

Another major crime avoided thanks to NextDoor.

Have never really understood the doorbell camera craze. Have never had one. Don't see the need.

I understand if someone wants video security, but there are much better options than a doorbell camera. And quite frankly, someone intending to do you or your family harm is most likely not coming to the front door.

I don't really think of ours as a security device. It's just nice to see who is at your door before you answer it. I can also talk to someone who comes to the door and I'm not at home. I can also watch when my kids come in and go out any of our doors.

Which is followed by "You can't be too careful these days."

Yes, you can.

This is how I use mine too. I have a lot of people (kids, cleaners, house sitters, etc) in and out of my front door when I'm not home. It's useful to know who is coming and going and when, and to be able to answer the door without going to the door.

put these ring camera's at the airport and POOF, no more need for TSA.

Also, WalMart has been doing this for about a decade now.

According to alarm commercials, just make sure your 1950s style side windows are utilizing the single butterfly lock to keep the white man in black clothes from being able to open it and let himself in.
