That's a pretty cool history. It's incredible to think one man could become both POTUS and Chief Justice.
I should have been clearer that he was referring to Hoover, who he viewed as a progressive, replacing him with a Bolshevik. Of course, it was a hyperbolic description.
It's hard to fault his concerns given what had occurred around the world from 1917-1929 and what he must have seen coming down the pipe in 1932.
No worries. It is a pretty remarkable family and I am wondering what the heck I am doing with these guys doing so much. I need to get my act together!
I have to search what half of the words were and meant back in those days as it was a different era. Who were the Marxist, communist, the bolsheviks, Leninist's and how did they all fit into the political landscape? I think I learned this in 8th grade but that was a long time ago. The most important thing was how did these views fit into the United States at the time as this power was rising not challenged worldwide until you could say WW2 and beyond.
President Taft was worried about a lot of people in both parties taking his position - there was a kerfuffle with Coolidge taking his position as well and he was labeled a progressive/liberal by Taft as well. Hoover had the power to replace with anybody so this is why Taft approached Hoover with his pick and he was granted his pick.
Again we could be wrong about this as new items are found everyday to contradict written history.
Fun fact I was named after the first Supreme Court justice.
