No surprise some watermelons (green on the outside, red on the inside) are suing to block this. They really don't care about the environment. It is about protecting illegal aliens at any cost, and by any means necessary.

And no doubt there is an Obama, Biden, or Clinton judge with a TRO already written up and ready to go.

Will escaping prisoners upset the diet of the alligators and pythons? We must build it and see.

This is an already existing facility. There is a nice long runway and several support buildings that have been there for years. The Feds/Florida is just adding a lot of what appears to be trailers and temp buildings. Probably also adding a fence if one is not already there.

Not sure how you can claim an environmental impact when the place has already been in use for aircraft for many years.

It was opposition from environmentalists which killed that airport project.

It was originally going to be the Everglades Jetport and would have been the largest airport in the world, designed for the Boeing 2707 SST.

That single runway was the only thing completed before the project was stopped.

Based strictly on the thread title, I guess those folks don't want all the empty water bottles and breakfast taco wrappers thrown on the ground around that place.

It really tells you how unpopular their policies are that they have to go running to the courts every time they don't get their way. At least this administration keeps chipping away and keeping them on their heels. I imagine this will just slow the process down, and that the detention center will move forward soon enough.

I managed numerous teams in Florida (and 23 other states) as a regional manager a few years ago....alligators aren't in any danger. Every free standing pool of water has signs "Beware, possibility of Alligators - No Swimming" at them for a friggin reason.

The only danger, if any, to Gators is the boom in python population.

Thousands of square miles of swamp.

I assure you the gators and the mosquitoes have plenty of space and don't mind.

I don't think this is a case of liberals trying to use the courts to obstruct Trump's agenda. It's more likely that Floridians want a detention center and fully support it in a better location.

Locals would reject anything being built in the Everglades or Big Cypress. While not as majestic as Yosemite or RMNP, ENP and Big Cypress are highly valued locally and Everglades restoration efforts are under constant threats.

I drive US 41 on a regular basis and have passed the jet port many times. There are still panthers and bears crossing that tiny road. It seems like an environmentally sensitive area to me.

Having finally looked up the place, this is a fantastic solution to all the naysayers about reopening the original Alcatraz.

Crazy this 2 mile long runway with accompanying taxiway exists in the swamp but the true story is it was to be built as a 6 runway, largest in the world and built to handle Boeings supersonic jet.

Then used for heavy aircraft training by Eastern and Pan-Am before flight sims became du jour.

Pretty sure whatever environmental impact that was going to make a difference in that place was made in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Reminds me of a program about a similar "remote" airport west of Jacksonville that also serves as an armory to store, move weapons. I think it is mostly decommissioned.

I am glad the construction and operation of a detention center for illegal immigrants called "Alligator Alcatraz has been approved. Good nations enforce immigration law. We can't just let everyone who claims they are trying to claim asylum or escape their horrid conditions in their home country. These environmental groups are filing a baseless lawsuit because the place has already been used by aircraft for many years. The Democrats continue to despise accountability and blame the border crisis they created on President Trump and ICE. It's beyond clear that the Democrat Party is intentionally enabling illegal immigration to register them to become future Democratic voters. Also, most illegal aliens are trying to dismantle the American culture.

I guess they can't get a district judge to issue an injunction anymore. This will proceed and it will be glorious.
