What the hell is this?? Colleges are/were allowing multiple graduations based on race, "gender identity" and other crap divisions??
No wonder Trump got medieval on Harvard's ass.
Bad bad, and bad.
They can go "celebrate their diversity" outside. Not as part of the university. Morons.

Colleges are canceling affinity graduations due to anti-DEI policies. Here is how students are preserving the traditions

Quote:

Elyse Martin-Smith began meeting with her classmates at Harvard University last summer to plan the annual Black student graduation hosted by a campus group she leads.

The ceremony was set to be a celebration of Black culture, featuring musicians, poetry readings, messages about the historic struggle for racial equality, and a speech by Nikole Hannah-Jones, the creator of the "1619 Project," Martin-Smith said.
Quote:

Students had reserved Harvard Memorial Church on campus for the event, she said.
But in early May, Martin-Smith said she received an email from university officials saying she would not be allowed to host the Black graduation on campus.

Harvard is among several universities across the country that have canceled affinity graduations amid threats from President Donald Trump to block medical research funding and revoke accreditation from schools that don't end diversity, equity and inclusion practices. Trump decries these programs as "illegal and immoral discrimination."

Affinity graduations are optional events typically led by students to celebrate different student identities and ethnicities. Commonly held ceremonies often honor Black, Hispanic, Asian, first-generation and LGBTQ+ students. Students say the events are significant because they honor the music, apparel, food, history, language and traditions unique to their identity.

Ivory tower Democrats are some of the most racist, divisive people in the country.

Affinity graduations should be insulting to every single college student, regarless of their race.

Leave it up to leftists to screw up what should be unifying celebrations.

Met a few of Harvard grads and current parents last weekend . They were bigly mad at all the racists that voted for Trump. They feel sorry for the students.
At Harvard. You know the school where you get in if you are madly brilliant or extremely wealthy / connected.
Whatever will the poor princess from sweden or wherever do now.

Kinda gave me a perspective of just how much of an elitist bubble some folks live in.

I know it has been going on for years, even at A&M. Just responding to the OP at how racist and hypocritical it is, especially coming from the so-called enlightened academics.

As my grandfather used to say, I wouldn't give you a plugged nickel for a whole truckload of them.

Hilarious that black students want to have a separate graduation to whine about racism...AT HARVARD. Historically, the most prestigious university in American and arguably the world.

Ironically, the only racism that happens at Harvard is against Asians and whites.

They are and it's pretty funny and sad. Grade inflation, racist admittance policies, David Hogg, far left wing advocacy.

It's a joke of an undergraduate school. No idea how infected there grad schools are.

If it was a "whites only" graduation, the screaming from the left would have been heard around the world. One graduation for all, regardless of race, sexual orientation, religious views, etc.

Too bad lots of white kids feel sorry and agree with these type ceremonies because they think the separate ceremonies are based upon oppression rather than flat out narcissism.
We as a nation have thrown money at these people for 65 years. That's a lot of money and that's a lot of generations who ought to have climbed to the top of the food chain by now. Guess they think the Irish, Italian and poor old southern white trashy folks had it easy as well. They didn't get special treatment, and yes I know they have white skin, but the prejudice was there.

This, among other genius ideas from the left like racially segregated dorms, has been going on for a while. They're not learning. That's a good sign for 2028.
The dems are sticking to their core principals of racism, sexism, trans, help for illegal immigrant gang-bangers, etc.
These are losing issues dems, but they keep fighting the fight.

To me this is a should/could issue. Freedom of association/assembly is an important part of our civil rights suite. If people want to do something as a group, so long as the government is unbiased towards it, and allows any group the same rights to request the use of public facilities, then if people choose to stage their own unofficial ceremonies based on their own self selected group criterion, so be it. I don't think it is wise to self segregate based off of superficial identity groupings but people have that right. The government needs to be neutral to it.

As I understand it, these things are supposedly unofficial and more like organized private special events, and only the general graduation ceremonies are official. Just because they can do these events doesn't mean they should.

Do they go to regular graduation as well? I'm for anything that will make a graduation shorter. Goodness gratuitous some graduations are brutally long.

Perfect example of the "slippery slope."

First, it was "let everyone have a graduation stole that reflects their heritage." So breaking with tradition, they introduced stoles with kente cloth, gay pride, etc.

Then it was "well, everyone deserves their own ceremonies where they don't feel oppression."

Now it's "let everyone behave however they want and wear all kind of crazy crap." Like this:

I think it is racist and divisive for any group to hold their own special graduation for their group.

That being said, they have a right to be racist idiots.

They have no right to expect university funding, support, or participation.

Pay your own bills, don't make it an official University function, go ahead.

From the OP:

"Students say the events are significant because they honor the music, apparel, food, history, language and traditions unique to their identity."

This is the problem with diversity all wrapped up in one sentence.

The traditions and trappings of graduation are ENTIRELY European customs, passed down from the earliest universities in Oxford and Paris from the 12th and 13th centuries. They have deep meaning and reflect a long history of European culture. They aren't supposed to include the "music, apparel, food, history, etc.," of every culture on Earth.

But rather than adopt and embrace those traditions (as white people have down for hundreds of years), everyone today wants institutions to corrupt them to reflect THEIR own culture.

If you want custom celebrations, have them at your house. You can have all the music, apparel, food, etc., you want.

And if the traditional graduation ceremony is too Eurocentric for you, skip it. I guarantee the university will mail you your degree.

I graduated more than 25 years ago. We just had 1 graduation at A&M. No racist/sexist graduation ceremonies.

I am shocked to hear A&M did it too.

Where's your compassion? Can't you imagine how oppressed some people felt at your graduation, graduating with everyone in their class together?

Stoles and cords have become flair competitions for commencement. When I went to commencement a couple weeks ago there were kids who were wearing multiple stoles and a half dozen cords all at one time, and that doesn't even include all the stupid BS the put on their mortarboard. It was completely ridiculous.

In a rare display of common sense, our local school district banned these personalized stoles a few years ago.

But given the makeup of district leadership, I doubt that the ban will last long.

All I remember about graduating from A&M is that I was so bored I had to damn near burn myself to stay awake.

It used to really bug me that certain groups would hold segregated ceremonies. Now, I just don't give a sh**. As long as the university isn't paying for it. I prefer for people to show their true stripes.
