Trump pardons Chrisleys

Quote:

President Donald Trump has signed full pardons for imprisoned reality show couple Todd and Julie Chrisley, who were sentenced to lengthy prison terms in 2022 for a conspiracy to defraud banks out of more than $30 million, according to a White House official.

In addition to the bank fraud convictions, they were also found guilty of several tax crimes, including attempting to defraud the Internal Revenue Service.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. If they did the crime they should do the time. Although I thought the time laid out was pretty excessive.

Savannah been lobbying hard for this.

We were in DC over Easter and the comment was made this was very likely to happen as she had been over to the WH, per this person, multiple times.

Personally, I am looking at the huge tax bill I having come do and if a $1 million campaign donation means I don't have to stoke that check, I think I would consider it.

Bank fraud like the kind Letitica James prosecutes?

Or bank fraud like the kind she commits?

I don't agree with any sort of presidential pardon for this sort of thing. I'd be fine if presidential pardons were not allowed at all.

I'm ok with defrauding the IRS as long as you pay what you really owe which is $13,500 in income tax per family member.

Similar to the Michelle Fiore pardon. Don't understand that one.

Agree that this is all that should be owed. Those that don't pay this amount are just sucking off the government teet and causing the rest of us to pay higher taxes.

From what I recall, Savannah Chrisley spoke at the Republican National Convention to discuss the weaponzied justice system being used against her family:

This is a stupid pardon.

But as Biden showed, there's no cap on the number of pardons so I'm not sure how it's a waste...

Hopefully they agreed to terms that if a pardon was given they could never appear on TV again.

Comparing the number of pardons by one president to egregious ones like this one from another is ridiculous.

If you're going to play the whataboutism card, do it right. Find a case where someone was clearly guilty of a crime where they benefited financially (in the millions), openly bribed Obama via a "donation" and then was pardoned. A single case like this is worse than 100s of low level drug offenses committed by individuals with no history of violence that by today's standards would not even be tried.

Also, commutations are very different than pardons.

Between Obama and Biden, there are MANY cases to sift through. I'm sure are some good ones that would make a better comparison to this case.

The playbook is out and well known at this point. Convicted of fraud and/or tax evasion? Donate some money, throw on a red hat, claim that you were only targeted by corrupt DOJ for being a DJT supporter.

Chrisleys were originally indicted by a federal grand jury in 2019. I wonder who was in charge of the DOJ then?

Maybe he's making ridiculous pardons to shine a light on how misappropriated they are. Encourage Congress to remove the power. Or at least change it so that it requires the consent of the Senate or something.

I'm the same, with one exception...

When it was clearly an egregious indictment and conviction that should never have been allowed to happen (not saying that about this case...I'm sure their probably well-deserving of their conviction) or if the sentences were way too extreme.

Some J6 defendants and some abortion protestors come to mind....either ridiculous lack of due process or ridiculously extreme sentences. I'm fine with a pardon in these cases.

This crap Trump is doing? It's no bueno, and I for the most part support Trump, but not here. He's wrong on these pardons, unless there is additional information that hasn't been made public.

Hopefully more will continue to be signed. The sentencing was insanely too long for the crime.

Prison should also only be used to separate those who are a danger to others and not housing people at taxpayer expense who are no real threat to anybody.

Pardon powers can only be curtailed by an amendment

Believe this is the better take.

He is going through cases where Biden & friends got a slap on a wrist if they received anything at all and Trump & friends got lengthy jail sentences and hefty fines.

With the Chrisleys, I recall there was a co-conspirator involved and some alleging that the true wrongdoing was by their "partner". Regardless, they should have known better.

I think the more appropriate thing would have been to commute the sentences and leave the financial judgments in place.

But again, Trump is making a point to highlight the two-tiers of justice metered out in a court system that Obama weaponized and that Biden ordered into action on many, many occasions to "get Trumo".

Reading comprehension. I said this was a terrible pardon. My snide comment was directed at it being a waste - it's not a waste because there is no limit to the number of pardons. As 0bama and Biden proved - like it or not.

Having said that - many pardons, across many presidencies, are terrible. My statement has nothing to do with whataboutism - I try very hard to not do that. But the scale of what 0bama and Biden did is ridiculous and an abuse of that power. I would say the same if an R did it at that scale. Sorry you can't see that through your rose colored glasses.

I agree if you're really rich and commit a crime involving money definitely no prison time should be involved. Prison is only for poor people who can't afford a good attorney or donation.

What I really like about your post is that even though you didn't really make any cognitive connection to what I said you were still able to virtue signal for whatever murderers, rapists, and other violent criminals who should be in prison forever.

It's because when you're dealing with white collar crimes, the penalties in the sentencing guidelines go up substantially once you get into seven and eight figures. In their case, it was a 20-level enhancement. Not saying it's right or wrong, just what it is.

Their co-conspirator, Peter Tarantino, was sentenced to 36 months, while Julie and Todd were sentenced to 84 and 144 months, respectively. Looks like he might have testified against them to get a better deal.
