Article says it could be due to the reward mechanisms used in training the model. This is a Pandora's box though, because if AI is "trained" with reward systems like humans, it appears a bad actor could train AI to act maliciously and self replicate, and basically do all of things we don't want it to do to preserve itself.


I have no idea how these models work so I'm speculating based on an article which is probably misleading since journalists often report cutting edge science incorrectly.
