Can someone help explain how and why measles is all of a sudden getting tons of media attentions months into Trump?

Did a few months ago hundreds of people in one year not vaccinate?

How did this happen all at once?

If people have been vaccinated for decades, how did measles just appear in 2025?

I'm confused and very ignorant. Help me understand please.

Millions of unvaccinated people from all over the world met up with a lot of antivaxxers that were worried about autism and now you have an outbreak.

This likely over simplifies it. But those are ingredients for the current situation.

If you have wide open borders….disease tends to follow.
Please tell me there's a special place in Heaven for Aggie fans! It's like we are living some sort of penance on Earth.

Has this been happening a lot but only blasted on media this year?

How did it happen this year?

Not a few years back? Surely antivaxxers have been a thing for longer than a few months??

The outbreak in West Texas is related to an immigrant Mennonite community and was brought in from another country. It has spread from them into local anti vaxers. It also seems that quite a few anti vaxers are rushing to get their kids vaccinated now that kids have died.

Okay, that makes sense. Thank you.

The measles were brought in to the Mennonite community several months ago.
The Mennonites have been in Gaines County for decades.

Herd immunity works if the herd is adequately immunized
if the virus is introduced it can't find enough unvaccinated people to get rolling.
After decades of a small percentage of people not getting vaccinated there are enough unvaccinated people for the virus to get rolling.
An earlier poster is correct that the virus has been in circulation among foreigners but this time when in came to America the virus got a foothold and then found the Mennonites in the panhandle and the numbers became a new modern record

To call the mennonites immigrants is IMO not accurate. There have been mennonites in Gaines county for decades Maybe Mennonites from foreign countries brought the measles to the American Enclave. The virus found the Texas Mennonites and the outbreak became news

Immigrants can bring in disease, but we have a lot of disease here already.

Not too long ago, there was a typhus outbreak in Los Angeles. Many people here were ecstatic to blame it on immigration when the actual facts are that typhus is endemic in much of the country including the Los Angels area. In other words, the typhus came from the US, not from immigrants.

Bubonic plague, rabies, hantavirus, and tularemia exist in the US. If we should see outbreaks of any of those, don't be too quick to blame them on immigrants.

Measles is actually one disease that has been eradicated from the US but travelers outside the country to bring it in from time to time. In many cases, those travelers are US citizens travelling outside the country.

Yes Mennonites have been around the area for decades. But new Mennonites are moving in from Mexico and Canada to join their brethren.

There were over 1200 cases in 2019 and it did not get the continued coverage that it is getting now. There have been 800 cases this year and last I read there were 25 active cases.

Many local stations in Texas give it tons of coverage, with daily case counts, reminders that children have died from it, and that it shows "no signs of stopping."

Sound familiar?
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Yeah. I'm no anti-vaxxer, but I have family who are. I never understood them until watching our medical community self immolate over Covid. Ive totally learned to respect their position enough to stop over simplifying and disrespecting their thought proces.

At the possible cost of things like your kid being deaf. Or dead. A minor inconvenience.

Sure. I guess that's fair trade.

And if you listen to the MSM, Texas is some sort of "epicenter", yet this pattern has been with us for several years nationwide.

There hasn't been a death since 2015 and there are 3 this year.

It is also April, so I am not sure what your point is about 1200 in 2019 when there are more than double that four months into the year.

We've been told repeatedly that all the illegals have their shots…so the problem must be all the anti-vaxxers. Anti-vaxxers must have grown the measles in their butts or something, but I'm no doctor.

Mennonites have been in Texas for a long time now. Referring to them as immigrants is kind of strange as they are just part of west Texas like directional drilling.

Unfortunately, the lessons learned from Covid for people on the right is that you can't totally trust the health experts.

And the lessons learned for the left were to be more compliant sheep…

As I said a few posts earlier...

Yes Mennonites have been in the area for a long time. But conditions in northern Mexico have driven Mennonite communities there to leave and relocate to areas with existing Mennonite communities. Seminole and Dalhart have quite a few new Mennonite families from Mexico. Seminole and Dalhart also have the most measles cases.

It's in the news now to make people not support RFKJ and his efforts to get America healthy. By going against RFKJ they're going against Trump as well and that's what the MSM does.

I live in Lubbock. The measles outbreak started with Mennonite people that live around Seminole, in Gaines County. They weren't immigrants- they've been here for a long, long time. Decades. They don't vaccinate. Seminole, Tx and Gaines County, are known for having " lax" shot records in their school systems. That is one of the reasons those people, gather there.
Two children have died, several more in the UMC Hospital, here in Lubbock. This has been going on since late Feb / early March.

I've met a few Mennonites from around Texhoma, Texas and from around Adams, Oklahoma.
