I have living relatives who picked it in the 40s and they were poor pasty white folk.

Hell, I have picked a few dozen bags myself growing up around cotton farming in my late childhood. But at that point machines had been doing the bulk of that work for decades.

Last hand picked cotton I ever saw was about 1960 or so, and dad only hand picked the first pre-freeze bolls. Once the frost killed the plants, he finished with machines.

They were cotton strippers, not pickers, but still cotton harvesting.

Pickers were legal guest workers from Mexico.

So her argument is that black people are done being slaves, so we need to import some different people to be our slaves?

Why is she speaking about immigration at church? I thought churches would risk losing their tax exempt status, if they got political. Is that not the case? And regardless the laws, this is church...teach scripture, or sit down.

Show her photos of 5 different crops and see if she can even figure out which one IS cotton.

When I was a kid, strippers were the only machines used in the Panhandle/South Plains, irrigated or dry, mainly because the cotton was "stormproof", with a tighter bract that held the cotton more securely. And because we did one pass harvesting, usually after frost. This as opposed to places like the Brazos Valley, where they picked the field multiple times through the season, while the cotton continued to produce

The first units that baled the cotton onboard were pickers, so many of the first machines to show up in the South Plains were the picker versions
