The trend was particularly pronounced among early-career researchers. Of the 690 postgraduate researchers who responded, 548 were considering leaving; 255 of 340 PhD students said the same.

These are academically brainwashed people that have nothing in common with our country's values. Now that Elon is getting rid of all the waste, fraud and abuse, their gravy train has been derailed and they have no reason to stay.

Don't let the screen door hit you on the way out.

buh bye.

I am waiting for the millions of H1Bs to threaten us to leave and go back to India and have our IT systems fail.

I would very much be interested in the immigration/h1b/asylum/citizenship breakdown of those who were polled. I imagine that has a drastic impact. It's easy to say "I'm going to pack my bags and go back home" if you are an upper caste H1B from India. Less so if you are an asylum immigrant from Venezuela. Or Tiffany who grew up in the suburbs and has only traveled out of country on vacation.

This might concern more if it were not for the recent instances of these equity oaths and about the past that was going on in the medical school graduation ceremonies up Midwest that Prager talked about back in the Biden period.

The trend of present science activism is not so encouraging and maybe fresh post-Biden ones embarking on it will work out better.

But they won't. Those that have the balls to do so will quickly come back once they realize how cushy they have it here.

My guess is at least 80% are foreign born...

It is indeed a resounding indictment of the scientific and educational systems in this country.

"... disruptions to science ..."

This statement alone just tells you they have no idea what science is.

The only thing Trump disrupted is their federal graft.

Private business research >>>>> academic research.

Though there are certain facets where it makes sense to pool money for academic research that a single business could not fulfill, a significant amount of academic research comes with bias towards leftism, big gov, and corruption.

Quote:

"I've been looking very diligently for opportunities in Europe, Australia and Mexico."

"If I want to work in that space, I'm going to have to find somewhere else that prioritizes that." Private US funding, such as through philanthropy, is an option, but she anticipates that she would be competing with a glut of formerly federally funded projects.
Because Europe and Australia are well known for their pro-immigration policies /sarcasm

They realize there may not be a large enough private market for their research, so they'll need to find a sugar daddy, in part, because government programs are crowding out opportunities.

On a more basic level, you really don't want the so easily pied-piper'd and emotional to become the heads of scientific thought. There is already a sense of unsuitability there. The lack of detachment so crucial to being willing to look at the facts as they are.

Now leaving because of a strong sense of uncertainty and your field is starved or closed, that's entirely different and understandable.

Yeah this is right up there with the Austrailian universities having a hissy fit because the US was cutting off their research funds... or at least making them justify why they should continue to receive them. Where do all these people get off with their entitlement attitudes towards US money? If their research is so damn important and useful I'm sure someone will be willing to fund it.... maybe us, but someone. China, maybe. Then it will be interesting to see how those academics fall all over themselves to ingratiate their departments to Uncle Xi.

China's money comes with many, many strings... ask the BRI "victims".

Should be the voice asking "Is this that different than 2021?" The answer is no, not really. 2021 a survey of researchers asked "Are you considering leaving research?" 75% of them said yes.

When asking someone whether they're considering something the default answer to that is usually yes, because when asked they conceptualize what you're asking them to consider and then consider it. Ask how likely they are to actually act on those considerations and the concern you have will fall off a cliff.

They are here, because there is money here. They are here, because other smart people are here. Lots of them.

So all the scientists on the climate change tit are thinking about leaving.

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu

Adieu, adieu, to you and you and you.

Oh, and don't let the door hit you on your ass on the way out.

Maybe we could look at this 75% and check their tweets/posts from March 2020 - 2024.

If they said COVID vaccines stopped the spread, ivermectin is horse paste, the science is settled, lab leak is a conspiracy theory then will you join us in our declaration that these 75% leaving the sciences is not a bad thing?

We have a very good measuring stick (covid) for scientists to show if they are open minded and willing to follow the facts or just parrot talking points

Leaving isn't the solution. The rest of the world combined isn't going to invest like America has in the past.

The money and the infrastructure is absolutely breaking at the moment. Does the administration have a real plan to fix what they've broken? We will see.

I've invested 30 years. I've got 50+ peer reviewed articles in the literature. I'm tired. If my situation evaporates I'm done. I'll go sell fishing lures at bass pro and watch the world burn.

Actually I have a good friend with a phd who left a university job as a researcher because he was tired of being told his results before his did the study.

Because desired results = more funding.

Undesirable results = no funding.

Can truly believe that. Was once told its "easier to just write something and say it instead of making sure it is accurate or correct. No one really notices or cares if its correct." That was last century so the correlation to funding to results distortion is older than it may look.

Worried that all the govt grants and/or NGO money for climate change studies will be drying up.
